University of California fullback and linebacker, has been signed by the San Francisco Forty Nuiers. The 230-pounder was the 13th draft choice of both the Forty Niners and the Oakland Raiders of the American Football League Pierovich made some 574 yards rushing the past two season, but San Francisco officials indicated he was being drafted solely for his linebacking skills. Replying to critics who have said that interest in baseball is on the downgrade, Giles cited a variety of surveys which he said prove that the game is thriving as never before. "Not in my lifetime do I ex pect to see any sport match base ball in public appeal," said Giles, who then ticked off the following reasons he believes prove that in terest in the game is at an all time high: -The 1961 World Series reached a peak TV audience of 59-million persons. In addition. the games were carried on 341 radio stations in the United States and 55 in Canada. A total of 35.000 teams played in some 5,700 Little Leagues in 1961 21 years after the Little League program began with four teams. i American Ljegiuu ledllia num bered 17.606 in 1961 compared with 12.265 in 1940. More than 5-million baseball gloves and a total of 10.643,136 baseballs were sold in 1961, ac cording to figures supplied by sporting goods manufacturers.
