finals;
Trailing 11-4 after eight innings,
Roseburg led off the top of the
ninth with a walk to pitcher Tom
Hobbs and a single by Marv
French.
And the large Roseburg contin
gent, which had little to cheer
about after a nine-run Nevada ex
plosion In the first inning, suddenly
came to hie.
The next Roseburg batter, second
baseman Jim Jarvis, hit to Haw
thorne shortstop Toby Leigh for
what should have been a routine
double play,
Leigh scooped the ball up easily
and tossed to second baseman Ray
Montoya who dropped the ball,
lending the base.
Pinch hitter Bob Manning sing
led to short right and it was an
11-5 game.
Lake Doubles Home Three
Then up stepped big 6-4 Ron
Lake who belted a long double,
three runs scoring. And Nevada
starter Keith Stauffer gave way to
Dean Slsk.
Gordon Avery then doubled
home Lake to make it 11 9, taking
third when the centerfielder went
into a juggling act.
A walk to Larry Burr put the
tying run on first and the Rose
burg delegation began thinking
about cancelling the long drive
home.
But the pressure, which had
been rather light when Roseburg
appeared out of It, suddenly be
came heavy when the Oregon bat
ters realized they had an excellent
chance to tie or win the game.
Sisk got the next three men in
short order Chuck Hiney strik
ing out, Jim Beamer popping to
the shortstop and pitcher Hobbs
lining out to second.

Toby Leigh greeted Foote with
a two-run homer over center for
the fifth Nevada run. And Alan

homer to make it 6-0.
Dick Blackorby, ninth batter in
the Hawthorne lineup, sent a rout
ine opposite-iield single to left But
Chuck Hiney, instead of waiting
for the ball to bounce, lunged for
a circus-try, missed and Blackorby
went all the way to third the
first triple of the tournament.
Blackorby scored a minute later
with the seventh run of the inning
when Ray Montoya was safe on
Lake's error.
Keith Stauffer and Dale Jeffers
walked to load the bases, and Dean
Sisk singled home two more runs
to make it a 9-2 game. Finally,
Oliver Blanks obliged with his sec
ond strikeout of the inning and the
explosion was over.
Roseburg Fights Back
Roseburg kept fighting, scoring
two runs in the sixth to make it
10-4. With two out and the bases
loaded, Roseburg shortstop Marv
French sliced a hard drive to right
that had trouble written all over
it, but at the last second the gangl
ing Blanks dug it out of the air.
In the end, it probably meant
the difference between winning
and losing for the Cinderella Ne
vada kids.
Sisk was again the leading Ne
vada batter with three for four,

Roseburg's Gordon Avery breaking

Phoenix appears to have the in

And that staff has looked formid

The odds are way in Phoenix's
favor, but Nevada Coach Bob Lof

worried about odds.

For one thing, they weren't sup
posed to win a game according
to some pre-tourney forecasters.
And even the Nevada boys weren't
very sure, bringing only a few bats
