Sandbdtj operations paying
off in flood-ravaged area
The Bend Bulletin, Friday, April 1, I960
By United Prt lnternllonl
Around the clock sandbag oper
ations acainst enraged rivers
were paying off in Nebraska to
day but new floods elsewhere in
the Middle West brought the num
ber of homeless to 6,000 persons.
National Guardsmen, civil de
fense workers and volunteers
were winning the battle of the
levies in Nebraska, hardest-hit
state in the Midwest flood belt.
Although close to 4.000 persons
were homeless in the state, the
floods failed to make a major
breakthrough.
However, the tons of water
surging down flooded streams in
the country's mid-section were
pouring into the great Mississippi

and Missouri Rivers.
Chunks of ice tore seven
ton gates from an electric power
dam on the Mississippi at Keo
kuk, Iowa. The breakthrough was
expected to cause a three-foot
Hash rise downstream.
The Weather Bureau at Mem
phis, Tenn., far downstream, is
sued its first flood warning for
lowland residents in five years.
The Missouri River was out of
its banks in parts of Nebraska
and Missouri. Missouri Guv.
James T. Blair ordered the Na
tional Guard to sandbag levies
near Glasgow, Mo., to prevent a
breakthrough.
The death toll mounted as the
floods spread from Wisconsin, Il
linois and Michigan into the Ohio
Valley and Pennsylvania. Eleven
persons were dead four in Mis
souri, three in Nebraska and one
each in Illinois, Kansas, South Da
kota and Michigan.
Two Seventh Day Adventist
ministers vanished on a boat trip
up the rain-swollen Shiawassee
River in central Michigan. Offi
cials said the current was ton
strong for their small boat and
their only chance was in reaching
high ground.

NEW YORK a'PI For those
who swing only with the quiet,
underplayed mysteries, "T h e
Bat" will never do.
But for those who enjoy their
who-dun-its in the all-out, no-doors-barrcd
style, where charac
ters have names like Courtleigh
Fleming, hands reach through
windows, shadowy figures dash
down corridors, people streak up
and down stairs while old women
shriek and heroes hold their chins
high, Thursday night's production
of "The Bat" should have been
perfect.
I thought the 3(Vyear-oId mys
lery melodrama classic by Mary
Roberts Iiinehart and Avery Hop
good got NBC-TV's "Dow Hour of
Great Mysteries" off to a de
lightfully spooky, exciting start.
Waller Kerp's adaptation re
ceived a staging that made no
attempt to conceal or soften a
story that has been made to seem
rather primitive and quaint with
the passage of the years. In fact,
the opposite was true. The pro
duction by Robert Saudek Asso
ciates used those very fundamen
tal touches the creaking doors,
thunder, dark hallways, hidden
rooms, dead bodies and furtive
glances to make "The Bat" cap
tivating entertainment.
They don't write 'em like that
anymore. (And if they do, they
don't get them produced.) But
the suspense-building tricks still
work. The plan that scared audi-

ences three decades ago had
plenty of scary hits of business
to offer Thursday night, thanks to
the high-speed, busy staging by
Paul NickeLl,
The cast that made it hum in
cluded Helen Hayes, Jason Ro
hards and Margaret Hamilton.
Miss Hayes was just right as the
shrewd, indomitable Cornelia Van
Oren. Miss Hamilton, as usual,
was excellent as a nervous wreck
named Lizzie. Robards didn't en
ter into the spirit of the play as
j completely as he might have. But
as a representation ot a iamous
old mystery story, this product of
"The Bat" hit a home run.
"The Many Sides of Mickey
Rooney" were exposed to a CBS
TV special Thursday night,
The hour offered Mickey a
chance to act, sing, dance and do
comedy. He proved that he is un
doubtedly a great guy to have at
a party, or on a night club stage.
Much of Rooney's humor, how
ever, is the sort that schoolboys
go in for. It involves such deli
cate touches as nose-wiping, gar
lic breath and the drunk act. It
draws easy laughs I laughed,
too but it is the sort of laugh
ter that has mental reservations.
The show's pace, crisp at the
start, wilted before the half-way
point and never managed to perk
up again. Assisting Mickey were
Joey Forman and Gloria Dt
Haven.
Historians may be interested to
note than when Mickey imperson
ated a drunk in one sketch, he
opened with: "Which way is it to
'The Jack Paar Show'?"
Joe E. Brown served as host
Thursday night for ABC-TV's vi-
! deotaped circus special, which
featured a number of acts in the
1 one-ring Bertram Mills Circus of
London. The performers were
brisk, daring and clever and al-
i though inadequate lighting dimin
ished the effectiveness of the per
formances, it still adds up to a
delightful show for children of all
ages.

screens . . . "The Renegade." a
