PORTABLE SCALES' Charles Porfily, right, Future Farmerj of America instructor at the Red
mond Union High school, weighs Mike Harrington's steer on the new trailer scales. Central Ore
gon Production Credit association donated $300 toward the $500 cost of the scales. The Feder
al Land Bank contributed the other $200. The Fairbanks-Morse soales will be used by FFA and
4-H club groups. The scales will get arl official trial at the fat stock show sponsored by the Kiwan
it club Friday night at the Fair. (Bend Bulletin Photo)
Fair Showman Must Train
As Hard as Movie Actor
The 4-H beef project book says
"Lead strap or rope should be
folded or coiled neatly and held in
right hand or in both hands when
leading. Hold lead to keep animal
under control at all- limps. . .al
ways lead from left of animal. . .
lead slowly, walk forward, keep
animal's head up. . .lead In a cir
cle large enough to keep him well
posed. . .show beef animal with
feet squarely under if. . .never
stretch or allow animal to stand
with front feet back and hind feet
forward. . .give the judge full view
of your animal at all times."
When you see the 4-H boys and
girls and FFA members in the
show rings at Deschutes county
fair, you can be sure most of them
have cared for and worked with
their animals many months be
forehand. The same will be true, of course,
for the 4-H and senior horse drills,
horse shows and horsemanship
contests.
The program of events may be a
little bewildering to the person not
familiar with the processes of
judging livestock and showman
ship contests. For instance, a beef,
I daily animal, sheep or swine may
be judged blue ribbon or champion
in ils class, but would not neces
sarily win a showmanship contest.
The two competitions are, in fact,
practically unrelated.
Show For Fun
The livestock 4-H clubbers (and
FFA members) will enter certain
animals for judging which they
feel come closest to fulfilling the
requirements for top quality of
their breed. They also take part
in showmanship contests with
other animals they have trained
specially for the fun and com
petition in the show ring. ,
In showmanship the judges con
sider how well the animal has
been trained to respond and how
its owner manages both his or her
animal and himself or herself in
the ring. The animal itself might
grade low in quality, though It
must be neat and clean of course.
For each of the classes of 4-H
livestock there fs a project booklet,
written by qualified persons. The
books contain specific, plainly
stated information to g u i d e a
young stock raiser from the time
he acquires his animal to the final
showing or judging.
In the 4-H sheep project, for in
stance, the purpose is "to learn
how to select and raise good
1 sheep. . .to accept responsibility
for a live animal of your own. . .to
learn to keep and use records. . .
to learn how animals live and pro
duce their young". Advantages:
"Oregon climate and soil produce
good pasture for sheep. . .sheep
can be handled by boys and girls
too small to handle larger ani
mals." Suggestions: Manage wise
ly. Make your animals .comfort
able. Be sure they have shade,
fresh water, salt, freedom from in
sects. . .be kind to your sheep.
Teach them to trust and respect
you."
Showman Must' Be Sharp
Then, characteristics of various
breeds are given, breeding, lamb
ing,., care of ewes and lambs, di
sease and insect control, proper
feed and pasture, shearing and
care of fleece, raising "bummer"
lambs, fitting and showing
"work with your sheep until it is
gentle and will load or stand as
you desire. A few minutes a day
for several weeks is much better
than several hours a day just be.
fore the fair! "
The appearance of the showman
is important. "Be sure your hands,
face, fingernails, clothes and shoes
are clean. Hnve your clothes press
ed and your hair combed. Jeans,
slacks, or pedal pushers' with a
shirt, blouse or T-shirt are OK."
In showing the sheep, "lead your
sheep into the show ring with your
left hand under its jaw and your
right hand on the dock. Always
face the judge so he has full view
of your sheep. . .be careful not to
obstruct judge's view of other
sheep in the class. Be alert. Be
courteous and pleasant." . 1
Important characteristics: "Re
member choose long. deep, wide
ewes that carry their width the
entire length of the body, and that
stand on comparatively short,
strong legs and close to the
ground. A normal jaw on a sheep
will have teeth meeting the pad
close to the front of the jaw. . ." ,
Trained Pig? Yes, Indeed!
For fitting and showing a hog
"Practice moving him daily with
a cane. . .by placing the cane on
the side of the head. . .touching
him behind to move forward. . . i
and in front of his face to, stop1
him. . .Daily handling is a "must" 1
to properly train a hog." i
Cleanliness and a balanced ra-.
tion are very important in raising
hogs. You want a pig that will j
gain- on the least teed. . .A broad :
head that is well proportioned. . .
the body should be deep. . .avoid .
a long, rangy pig and the very
short, fat type. . ."
The dairy project book discuss
es such things as selecting and
raising the calf, normal growth of
dairy cattle, care and manage- j
ment of producing cow, DHIA, j
steps in producing 'high-quality j
milk, how dairy products are mar
keted. Like the other booklets, the dairy j
project book carries interesting
and useful pictures, charts and
sketches the parts of a dairy
cow, proper methods of dehorn
ing, measuring heart girth, proper
feed and pen, how to keep pro
duction records.
Wash Ears, Fluff Tall
Clipping is important but nec
essary clipping should be done a
month before the fair. "The night
before showing wash the ears and
switch. Braid the switch on older
animals. . .fluff the tail just before
entering the show ring. . .give
your animal a libera feed of good
hay the morning of show day. . .
take the chill off drinking water.
Be sure your animal is absolute
ly clean before leading into the
show ring. Use a clean halter,
properly adjusted to the animal.
You should be neat and clean, too.
Be ready when your class Is call
ed. . .
Some of the characteristics of a
good beet animal are: hindquar
ters deep and wide, deep body with
parallel top and bottom lines,
strong top line and full loin, short
neck and broad short head.
Herdsmanship is another im
portant part of club members' ex
hibits, and it, too, is judged. Herd
smanship involves knowing how to
feed and care tor livestock prop
erly and doing It; keeping ex
hibit attractively displayed at all
time. . .having a place for feed,
equipment and personal things and
keeping them there. . .being regu
lar and prompt with each day's
feeding and cleaning. A good herd
sman ties his animals securely so
they are comfortable, yet not
loosely enough to back into the
alley or disturb other animals. A
good herdsman is friendly and
helpful toward visitors and other
herdsmen, knows his animals and
is ready to answer questions about
them, keeps alleys neat and clean.
