last Resort'
Meeting Sought
With Kuwatly
By WALTER LOGAN
I'nltrd Pmia Staff Correspondent
The Arab states are seeking a
"last resort" meeting with Syrian
President Shukri el Kuwatly to
try to prevent Syria from becom
ing the Soviet Union's first Middle
East satellite nation, unofficial
Arab reports said today.
Kuwatly already was In Egypt
where he conferred with Egyptian
President Gamal Abdel Nasser.
Some sources said he appealed to
Nasser to exert his influence with
the ruling leftist military clique in
Syria Jo cool down their pro-Moscow
enthusiasm.
A Cairo dispatch said Kuwatly
was in touch with Damascus by
telephone from his sickbed in the
Moassat Hospital In Alexandria,
but there was no confirmation of
reports King Saud of Saudi Arabia
would travel to Egypt for an Arab
"big three" meeting with Nasser
and Kuwatly.
The Egyptian press gave all
out support today to the present
Syrian regime. It attributed the
Syrian crisis to alleged efforts by
the Elsenhower Doctrine to isolate
Egypt from Syria, its chief friend
in the Arab world.
Syrian Foreign Minister Saleh
Bltar told a news conference
Monday the Elsenhower Doctrine
was responsible for the present
turmoil in the Middle East. He
said Syria was the target of "de
structive activities' aimed at
making it accept the doctrine.
"It Is well known that the main
object of these conspiracies to
overthrow the Syrian and Egyp
tian regimes is to set up govern
ments that will change their lib
eral foreign policies," he told cor
respondents. King Hussein of Jordan, whose
kingdom borders Syria, was re
ported increasingly concerned
with developments in Syria. Saudi
Arabia's charge d'affaires in Am
man flew back to Riyadh Monday
with a message from Hussein to
Saud on the Syrian events.
