Many of the packages sent in were ad dressed merely to the. big estate on Pennsylvania Avenue. After the presenfs were examined (or germs and bombs, they wer? dis- I tributed among the White House j staff. Across the street at Blair House sat poor Victoria Geaney, the love . ly hostess, who probably knows i mure of the high and mighty in ' the world than any woman alive. I Mrs. deaney was all alone, ex- j cept for her two canaries, "Gold en Boy" ami "Yellow Boy" and ; her parakeet, "Blue Boy." She prepared and ate her Christmas i dinner alone. Pretty fine meal. too. even if the lady guardian of Btair lipase had to stir it up her self. "I was so sit'k and tired of turkey," she said, "Uiat I decided to have capon." She basted the bird with one hand and did a little dusting with the other. The next importan guest will le Sir Anthony Eden from the Isles. Commonly the 317lh Infantry Kestfrve unit here has a beer par ty at the Yuletide. But this year they forgot about the suds and did something pretty nice. They put their beer money into the pur chase of Christmas baskets for the needy. The parcels wero peddled around by the youngsters pf the 435-man unit. This might be an idea there for other groups. Salesgirls in a lot of depart ment stores were a little upset because diplomats in their shop ping complained about local sales taxes. That calls for a lot of pa per work. So a lot of the girls solved all that by dipping into their own pockets to chip in the pennies themselves. Sen. Estes Kefauver. the gen tleman from Tennessee who has an eye on the White House, ran afoul of the language barrier when he was in Sweden. The pa pers over there called his fancy bonnet with the tail behind a "washing bear cap." Turns out Dial was pretty close to right. 1 The translation means . "raccoon.1 almost. Seems that the driver was ! irritated and yelled out: "Will some of you more inteuigem peo ple please move back in the bus?" There wasn't a dummy aboard. The American Legion, at its convention in I-os Angeles next year, will hold its parade off the Sl'GGESTION OFFERED MADISON, Wis. (UP) Albert Furseth today offered a suggestion for ending deaths on highways: "The federal government shall make a law and enforce it that every car must be enuipoed with instruments that will sing "Nearer My God To Thee" when it hits 50, let out a terrible scream when it hits 55. and blow a fuse when It hits 60." (UP) -George Melvin, 92, has "checked out" of the second career of his long life. Melvin, who was a nationally known miller for many years, said he has decided to retire from hi- second career In the hotel business which he started at the age of 77. From 1900-W, Melvin was super intendent at a milling company here and served as president of the American Millars' Association and Michigan Millers' Association. After retiring as a miller, Mel vin became a room clerk at the Champs Hotel here and during the last 14 years has become widely known to traveling men and other guests at the hotel. I think it's about time to toss in the sponge," said Melvin, who looks 20 years younger than he is. SWSETiE PiE by.Nadina Selrw 1831 "What's the matter? Couldnt you sleep either?"
