Miss Carolyn Pond Is spending the New Year's weekend in Bend with Miss Valerie Nelson, who is home from Oregon State college visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Nelson. The two girls are sorority sisters. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Benson left yesterday for Salem, where they are students at Willamette Univer sity. They spent two weeks in Bend witn Benson s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Byron Benson, 1155 Har mon boulevard. . Mr. and Mrs. Phelon Cullison re turned yesterday to Forest Grove, where he is a student at Paoific University, They visited in Bend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Phelon Cullison Sr., 1567 Awbrey road, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry .Waldron, 1429 Awbrey road. Mrs. Cullison was formerly Helen Elster. . Harold E. Davis, formerly of Bend, suffered a fall Dec. 23 at his home In Portland, and Is a patient at P.iysicians and Surgeons hospital there, it was learned here. His injuries included several bro ken vertebrae. Davis was manager of the local Piggly-Wiggly store-for a number of years. His wife is the former Louise Triplett. pvt. David Dempsey and Pvt Richard Carter are home on four- day leave from Fort Ord, Calif., where they are taking their eignt week basic training course. Pvt Dempsey is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Dempsey, 1810 E. Third street. Pvt. Carter is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Carter, 31 Nor ton avenue. Miss Gloria Hutchins returned today to Portland after a holiday visit with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Hutdhins, 355 E. Irvin; avenue. She teaches at Lewis and Clark college. NOW PLAYING! Sholcs and his deputies and sent home as a Christmas present to the mother he hadn't seen lor three years sent back a message today. So did his mother. Tlte boy. Dennis Stasio. had a "hard tout nice" bus trip from Bend to Berryville, Va., he wrote. and thought his mother was his aunt, he hadn't seen her for so long. The mother wrote: ' . . . He says you all were so good to him. Thank God for men like you. He is going to study at night school and get his diploma." Dennis ran away from daily beatings given him by his father in Buffalo, N. Y., several months ago, he said, and drifted west. On the 14-below zero day in November he annealed for shelter to the Red mond police and they turned him over to Sheriff Sholes. The sheriff picked up a cJew to the whore abouts of the mother, who hart left her Buffalo husband three years ago, and located her In Berryville, Va. She was overjoyed when she learned her son had been found and sent money for his re turn to .her. Tribal Officials Are Sworn in . Special to The Bulletin MADRAS Three new officials of the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Indian reservation have been sworn in, it is reported. Sam Scott, 43. took the position of chief justice of the tribal court, Avex Miller. 48, went In as tribal field man and Elton Greeley was named court clerk. T. W. Sanders, administrative officer, read ttle oath to the three. The new chief justice takes the post held by Mrs. Naomi Warner on a temporary basis since the death one year ago of Roy Mea cham. Prior to his recent appoint ment. Scott was tribal field man for 15 months. Miller, previously a monitor of the tribal loan commission, will work mainly wit".i credit. For a BIG time, you're invited to our Party on mfr u I T4 U iririk In The Heart of Bend Teacher Loss Third Highest Special to The Bulletin MADRAS Jefferson county was third highest in percentage of school teachers not returning, for the current school year, a sur vey of personnel turnover in "Ore gon recently finished by the Ore gon Education association, shows. Jefferson county lost 12Heaehers for 42.9 per cent not returning. There were 28 certificated person nel last year. Dropout reasons were not given, but it was assumed that some took teaching posts else where, some retired, and some went into other lines of work. The average Oregon school dis trict lost 20.04 per cent. The aver age turnover of smaller districts was 21.43 per cent. This year, 11 new persons were employed in Jef ferson county schools, a decrease of one teacher. Mabel G. Terrell Dies at Age 63 Mabel Grace Terrell, 63, a resi dent of Gilchrist since the town was founded, died yesterday eve ning at the St. Charles Memorial Hospital. Death occurred a few hours after she was brought to the hospital. Mrs. Terrell, wife of Robert J Terrell, had been -a resident of Oreson some 17 years. The family came to Gilchrist rom Laurel, Miss. Mrs. Terrell was a native of Cairo, Mich. Aside from her husband, Mrs. Terrell is survived by two sons, W. J. Terrell of Mercer Island, Wash., and Charles M. Terrell of Corvallis, and two daughters, Mrs. Mabel Eye of Portland and Mrs. Frankic Lou Foster ai Laurel. Six grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Terrell was a member of I he Eastern Star lodge and of the Gilchrist Garden Club. She also served as advisor for Camp Fire groups in Gilchrist. Mrs Terrell! was a member- of the Christian Science Church. Funeral services will be held here Saturday at 11 .a.m., at the Niswonger and Winslow parlors, with Rov. W. N. Byers, Gilchrist, in charge. Phone 1154, Jury Returns 4 Indictments Special to The Bulletin MADRAS The Jefferson coun- grand jury Wednesday after noon submitted a report in which four indictments were returned. recommendations for courthouse and jail were made, and an in vestigation of the cost of micro filming public records was pro posed. Three of the Indictments charged statutory rape involving a 134- year-old Madras girl. Indicted were John Marshall Dowdy, 42 LClyde Collins, 34; and Henry fneips, -u. Dowdy was arraigned before Circuit Judge Ralph S. Hamilton following the grand jury report He pleaded not guilty. Collins and Phelps will be arraigned Jan. 17. The fourth indictment, charging lewd cohabitation, was against Mrs, Wilma Moniral. Entering a plea of guilty Wednesday afternoon before the circuit judge, she re eelved a Jail sentence not exceed' ing three months. She will serve the sentence at the Mult tomah county jail at Rocky Butte. The grand jury, composed of Er- win Horney, foreman, and Flo Michael, Max Osborn, Bob Lundy. Henry Thornton, Geraldine Kiser and Hallena Hosman, said In their report: We' have thoroughly inspected the courthouse and jail facilities and find them to be insuffi cient, inadequate, and dangerous to the employees working therein and those citizens having business therein, and we make the follow ing unqualified recommendations to remedy such situation: That the present special levy if $25,000 a year for courthouse repair and jail building fund be continued until 1959 to accumulate funds for eventual erection of a nr" courthouse and jail. Hie county jail is overcrowded unsanitary, and unhoalthful as such, and due to the presence of City of Madras prisoners we re commend that the city find Its own facilities as soon as practical and the facilities presently used by the county and city be reserved exclusively for county prisoners 'We recommend that the county investigate the cost of having pub lic records microfilmed and stored due to the extreme fire hazard of the present courthouse.'
