Knowland Seen Urging Ike
To Make Early Announcement
WASHINGTON (UP) President
Eisenhower has heard both sid-?s
of (he debate over whether he
should announce his political inten
tions soon or wait until next spring.
Evidence suggests that Senate
Republican Leader William F.
Knowland personally presented to
Mr. Eisenhower the arguments fur
an early announcement. Knowland
had the chance to do so when he
conferred with the chk-X executive
at Gettysburg, Pa., earlier this
month.
There was no official word that
the two men discussed the Presi
dent's political future, just as there
has been no similar word from
Mr. Eisenhower's meetings with
other administration leaders, most
of whom feel the President would
benefit politically by making an
announcement on his intentions as
late as possible.
Wants Both Sides
But If Mr. Eisenhower didn't ob
tain Knowland's views, it would
surprise tltose familiar with the
way the President usually insists
on having both sides of an issue
Republican National Chairman
Leonard W. Hall has said he did
not think an early decision by the
President on the second term was
necessary and predicted it would
not come until March. And Presi
dential Aide Harold E. Stassen has
said the President could wait un
til July 1 to make up his mind,
if necessary.
If the Chief Executive does not
run in 1956, Knowland is almost
certain to bid for the GOP presi
dential nomination.
He has told friends that waiting
for a belated withdrawal by Mr.
Eisenhower would, in effect, nullify
presidential primary laws in those
states with early deadlines for en
try. 1 lence his friends are con
vinced he is unwilling to wait be
yond late January or early Febru
ary before declaring himself a can
didate. February Decision Seen
On the past two consecutive
weekends, Mr. Eisenhower's doc
tors have said it will be the mid
dle of February before the Presi
dent would have the final medical
evidence on which to base a deci
sion about running again.
If other possible candidates held
back until then, they would have
to pass up these deadlines for filing
in presidential primaries: Illinois,
Jan. 23; Alaska, Feb. 1; West Vir
ginia. Feb. 4; Ohio, Feb. 8; New
Hampshire, Feb. 11, and Minne
sota, Feb. 15.
There was an authoritative re
port last week that Eisenhower
backers in New Hampshire have
been assured that the President
will not pull the rug from under
them by bowing out before theii
March 13 primary.

Former Mexican Red Leader Back After 20 Years
MEXICO CITY (UP) The
mysterious return of a former Mex
ican Communist leader ufter 20
years behind tiie Iron Curtain has
become the "X" factor in Mexican
and Latin American Communist
activities.
Kvalo Vadillo, who was a mem-
ber of the central committee of the
Mexican Communist party when
he went to Russia "for one year"
in 1935 denies he came back to di
rect a Latin American Communist
network.
He Insists he was a "prisoner" of
the Soviets.
Vadillo was back In Mexico a
month before rumors of his pres
ence started circulating, some say
ing tliat he had been a prisoner of
the Reds and others that he had
been, sent back to Moscow.
The one-time Red firebrand, now
soft-spoken and subdued at 49,
tells a confusing story of his 20-
year absence but maintains he has
no "present" intention of entering
into any political or union activi
ties.

Yule Message
Offered by Ike
WASHINGTON (UP) President
Eisenhower told the world Sunday
that Christmas, 1955, Is "brighter
in its background and in its prom
ise than any we have known !ri
recent years."
It is "even brighter than last
year, he said, and that was the
first Christmas "in many years. . .
not marred by the tragic Incident
of war."
This was Mr. Elsenhower's mes
sage ot . Yul elide cheer as ha
pressed a gold telegraph key In
Gettysburg, Pa., lighting a huge
Christmas tree in the "Pageant of
Peace" exhibit at the White House
I in Washington.
Simultaneously, Christmas trees!
at many points across the nation, '
on naval vessels, in U.S. troop bar-'
racks overseas and In American
legations and embassies were lit. I
With this-ceremony the Presi-
dent also gave to the world his,
Christmas prayer. It was:
"Mary each of us strive to do'
our best to bring about better un-
derstanding in the world and may j
infinite peace from above live with
us and be ours forever and may i
we Live in confident hope that lt
will come.
The President's brief address
was carried to the nation via radio
and television. The Voice of Amer
ica shortwaved the ceremonies to
other nations in 38 languages.
After pressing the gold key that
lit the towering 65-foot South Da
kota spruce, Mr. Eisenhower
chuckled and said: "Well, It
worked." He made his address
from the office of the president of
Gettysburg College.
The tree, with Its hundreds of
gaily-colored bulbs, is the center
piece of the Pageant of Peace ex
hibit on the ellipse facing the White
House. Forty foreign embassies
have greetings displayed and many
of the 48 states have their own
Christmas trees.
Vice President Richard M. Nixon
introduced Mr. Eisenhower "loved
and respected as a great lender
in the cause of peace" and de
scribed the pageant scene as
great manifestation of the desire
of men everywhere for peace."

and spent 12 years in different So
viet prisons but considered himself
n prisoner the entire 20 years be
cause he was kept In Russia
against my will." When asked to
spell out the' charges on which he
was imprisoned he was vague.
You have to understand the So
viet regime," he said. "If you are
a Communist any disobedience is
punishable."
Whether or not Vadillo Is still a
Communist remains in doubt.
"I'm neither an anti-Communist
or a pro-Communist," is the
closest he has come to answering
the often-phrased question.
The bespectacled Vadillo is hard
ly recognizable to' veteran Mexico
City newsmen who remember that
he once was credited with taking
over a radio station at gunpoint to
broadcast Communist propaganda.
However, this activity was never
proven.
Accused Of Spying
Vadillo refuses to discuss his po
litical attitudes or his. opinion of
the success of the Communist pro
gram within Russia, pleading that
he Is "a little behind" after 20
years behind the Iron Curtain.
He said he served prison terms
in Russia on vague charges, In
cluding lus protest at the refusal of
visa to return to Mexico, ana
breaking a "work contract" he had
in an isolated Siberian village.
In 19-18 Vadillo said he was sen
tenced to 20 years in prison with
out trial for "spying for the Mexi
can government." He credited the
Mexican government and the Mexi
can embassy in Moscow with ob
taining his freedom with apologies
from the Russian government.
Bofore being sent directly to
Mexico City in a special plane, Va
dillo said he was hospitably treat
ed by the Russians who took him
on a tour of Moscow's huge new
University and modern industrial
plants. The Russians extracted-no
threats, he added.
He says he has not been con
tacted by any of his former Com
munist friends since his return, but
Red circles hero have been circu
lating the rumor that his "Com
munist convictions are firmer than
ever.
