Higher Defense
Spending Seen
In Coming Year
WASHINGTON (UP) The in
creasing cost of weapons and men
will" push defense spending next
year about one billion dolars high
er than the present level defense
officials said today.
Congressional leaders who have
been briefed on the new defense
budget reported that it cals for
an outlay of $35,500,000,000. Jt is
expected that defense spending fo.
the current fiscal year will total
about j:t4,500,000,000.
Defense officials, traditionally
reluctant to discuss budget details
until they are formally presented
to Congress, declined to reveal the
exact figures of next year's mili
tary budget. But they confirmed
that spending is scheduled to rise
Vbovc the 35 billion dollar mark.
Two Principal lteasoiu
They cited two principal reasons
lor the rising-expenditures:
1. New technological weapons,
Fich as guided missiles and ad
vanced interceptors and bombers,
ivhich become more costly as they
iecome more complex.
2. Increased wages for workers
in defense tplants as well as for
men in uniform and civilian, em
ployes of the Defense Department.
The increased tabor costs are also
renecica in nigner materiel costs
Nearly all the increase wiJl go
to the Air borce.
' Congressional sources reported
;4hat Air Force spending in thf
'coming fiscal year will total J17,
,; 200,000.000 a 700 million dolla,
increase over the present fiscal
; year. Most of the additional Ah
Force money will go into guided
missiles and aceellerated produc
tion of the new B52 intercontinental
jet bomber and new supersonic
fighter planes, such as the F10-1.
Army, Navy Increases
The Navy, congressional sn'irers
said, will spend $9,700,000,000, an
increase of 200 million dollars. The
Army will spend $8,600,000,000
a 100 million dolar increase.
About one billion dolars wil he
spent by all the services on guided
missiles. The budget also will pro
vide for expanded research and
development on long-range ballis
tic missiles, often caled the'ul
timate weapon" of the future.
The enlarged budget, appeared
likely to -win congressional approv
al without much opposition. The
complaint of Democrats last year
was that the administration had
cut defense spending too much.

Can't Have Fun
If They Keep
Calling far Caps
MIAMI BEACH (UP) An elec
trical engineer from St. Louis com
plained today that you can't have
much fun in a tourist spot if some
one calls the police everytime you
flash a $1,000 bill.
'This is a line thing," said
Thomas McGinnis, 31. "You'd
think in Miami Beach where all
the money floats around, a man
could change a $1,000 bill wiliiout
having the cops jump all over
him."
Detectives picked up McGinnis
in a nigiit club where he was try
ing to cash the bill. Oificers said
McGinnis had been going from one
night spot to another unsuccess
fully trying to flash the greenback.
his is no racket, McGinnis
said, "I'm insulted. When the bar
tenders declined to cash the bill,
I paid them with a tow small bills
I had on me."
Hut McGinnis wasn t as eager
to surrender the bill to police who
booked him on a eharge of vag
rancy and held him, of course, on
$1,000 bond. McGinnis held onto
the banknote and called a bonds
man to get him out of jail.
"If I'd given it to the police,
I'd be stuck with $31 in cash and
you can't live on that in a tourist
spot, he said.
Police checked McGinnis' story
lhat he had been given the money
by a friend when ho set out to
Florida to get a divorce. They
found the money was good.
McGinnis still must go before a
iu.lge Wednesday to answer llu
charges filed against him. Rul a
detective said, "confidentially.
here's nothing to hold him on."

1. Bring the tree indoors just

least one inch above the original

Place the freshly cut tree trunk
in water and keep level of water
above the cut the entire time the
tree is indoors. Check the water
level occasionally.
5. Support the tree well. Keep
it away from sources of heat, such
as fireplaces and radiators. Place
it so that, standing or fallen,' i'
could not block the way out of
the room or out of the house in
case of fire.
Highly-salted foods, if left stand

pans, can cause the insides to pit
and make them difficult to clean.
