They Wade Through Program
Ideas Pouring in Each Year
NEW YORK (UP) "I have an

letter started. . .
"First you paint the floor of
the studio In large squares like a
checkerboard. Then you ge( 2i

you dress in black and 12 ui

T.ie ni 1 sg u i derl missile, the
brainstorm of a TV addict who
seemed to have blown some tubes,
landed in the lap of NBC's Ross
Donaldson. It is Donaldson ami
his weary staff of 11 who wade
through the mountainous pile of
more than 3000 jn'uiiiv-m idea:
that pour into the network each
year.
Most, sad to say, wind up in

"We'd like to assure people that

is that they don't give us enough

Rejection Rate High
Donaldsun pointed out that the
rejection rate of ideas from-outside
the network is lugh only
about three to five per cent ever
reach the stage where they're se-
lously considered. And only a
fraction ot one per cent are
wugiit.
"Even when we buy an idea."
said Donaldson, "we usually only
ouy it for one element, like tne
title. We recently bought a title.
The Mind's Eye,' because it's in
line with some idea of our own!
we have in mind." ' )
For viewers wiio'fcel they" have
hot TV idea baking in their
ovens, Donaldson suggested the
uhowing procedure.-. .
First, write to the network ask
ing for a "policy form." The form
is protection tor the network the
signer agrees to rely on the "good

ing the amount of compensation.
Then, send in the signed policy
form, along with the idea, Tne

format, likely casting candidates
and budget suggestions. It also
nclps if you know a star like
Danny Kaye or Clark Gable and
you can guarantee him for & lead
role.
"The presentation can range
myAherf1 from five to 50 pages,"
pointed out Donaldson. "There's
no particular blueprint for writing
it."
Common Titfalls
Howevei, Donaldson suggested
th:;t suggestion-box contributors
steer clear of common pitfal.3.
"When something happens like
The $u4,0M Question,' we get
hundreds of quiz ideas." he said.
"Almost all of them suggest pro
grams that give away, say, $1,
000 or a million dollars tha: s
not really an idea. Neither is a
variation of an old quiz show like
Information Please' or 'Pot Of
Gold or 'Songs For Sale.
Many of- the ideas sent into
Donaldson's diggings are not us
able for other reasons. Among
the nifties he's turned down are

show based on astrology and one
in which NBC would stage the
greatest battles of all rime.
One woman, who claimed to'

she said helpfully.

Full Treatment
At Ike's Office
GETTYSBURG, Pa.. tUP)
Backstairs at the Gettysburg White
House:
President Eisenhower's official
callers during his recuperation
iere expect the full treatment
from the press corps when they
leave the President's ofiice. They
aren't usually disappointed.
Republican National Chairman
Leonard W. Hall, at a 25-minute
news conference following a 45
minute news conference following
a 45-mjnute talk with the Presi
aent, successfully fielded a bar
rage of questions on Mr. Eisen
hower's second term intentions.
men he hurried, as a man re
prieved, out to his waiting limou
sine.
"I've got to pick up a pack of
cigarets,'1 he told his chauffeur,
glancing up and down the street
for a likely source of supply. The
chauffeur replied helpfully that he
nad seen a dispenser just inside
the door ot the temporary Whtti
House press room.
Hall shook his head.
I dont want to go back in
there," he said, with finality.
The chauffeur went back lor the
smoKes.
The President's privacy on his
handsome farm estate suffered
sudden decline with faJ. when snel
lering trees sned then leaves. iow
it's easy, with a pair of binoculars,
to get a good look at the piace
from any of several vantage
points.
The persistent viewer can al
most count on seeing the Presi
dent, out for a few practice strokes
on his putting green or strolli.ig
around on his farm. Forluna.ciy
for the President's peace of mini,
and desire for privacy, tnere
aren't many tourists here this
lime of year. A pretty weekend
though still brings- them out by
the hundreds.
Cameramen are something else
again. Press Secretary James C.
Hagerty blew the whistle on. long
enses almost from tne stvt. He
mid the President never '.ould
feel free to go out if he knew a
camera was named on h.ni every
moment.
Then there is the matter of (hat
75-foot- observation tow..-, on the
edge of the Battlefield National
Park and just east of the Presi
dent's- farm. It .was' closed when
the President arrived on Nov. 11.
Last Sunday, a beautiful day, lucky
sight-seers found the gate unlocked
and climbed to the up by the
score.
The Park Service thought the
Secret Service hud oii.iy.'d it; and
vice versa. Turned out somebody
had picked the lock. Now its closed
again. The new lock will be hardes
to pick, and whoever picks it may
get into plenty of lrubie.
lugh Keckler, the President's
nearest neignoor. thought Mr. Ei
senhower might be interested in
his offer to sell the Keckler farm
house, plus 3 1 2 acres, a small
barn and a couple of outbuildings,
for $15,000. IL put "For Sile"
signs on the place, just down the
road from Mr. Eisenhower's main
entrance, las; weekend. But White
House sour; es sa'.d Mr. Eisen
hower, who had picked up a num
ber of tracts surrounding his place
to protect the area against com
mercialization, is about ready to
draw the line. He isn't inicrested
in the Keckler offer.
