Business of Sending Cards
At Christmas Traced to 1843
WASHINGTON (UP) Some of
the first Christmas cards carried
these messages: "And many
sweet returns." " Here's Christ
mas come again!" "Be Drivileeed
to see." And "To mv friend."
But who started ihe hi t
sending greetings to friends on
Christmas? Nobody knows for
sure, but it's likely it was an
English shop-keeper named Henry
t-oic.

TOKYO (UP) - Japan's top
military man. Gen. Keizo Hayashi,
says he is "expecting the most
complicated war in histor" but
doubts there will be any major
ngming lor at least three years.
" He charged that the Japanese
public's 'jumping logic" is hinder
ing the build-up of the new 180,000
man air, ground and sea self-defense
forces and blamed part of
the trouble on "Communist sub
versives." In an exclusive interview, the
chairman of the Japanese loint
staff council predicted three pos
sible types ol war:
1 "The next world war could be
a war without saving it's a war a
war of infiltration and subver
sion." 2 "Or it might be a war with
out atomic weapons. It could hap
pen . . . something like Korea- or
Indo-Chma.
3 "And then it may be a war of
the size and scale and methods
now undreamed of . . ."
Rearmament Attitude
The 48-year-old general discus
sed this defeated and disarmed na
tion's new military power and
stressed that it is a defense force.
"Because we were defeated, the
basic sentiment here s still 'hate:
war . . . and so hate war, hate
rearmament. That's the way the
people inmK. it s jumping logic
ine nation is not conscious
enough of the sejf-defense force
. . . and they don't understand it."
The genera said flatly that this
-"lack of understanding" has been
"aggravated by groups of Com-
munist subversives." J Ic refused to
elaborate.
"To maintain peace." he said
"we need a defense force to pro
tect our country. I hope public
opinion is heading in that general
direction."
Halfway Mark
The general glanced at two side-by-side
models of the latest Rus
sian and American supersonic jet
fighters in his office and comment-!

"No one can predict beyond
three years. But personally I'm
expecting the most complicated
war in history-
"It .won't be as simple as past
wars . . . and there may be many
small wars inside the big war."
Asked about the possibility that
Japan's dislike for war is so in
tense that its forces would do little
fighting. Hayashi replied:
"Our troops hate agrcssive war,
but they are willing to sacrifice
. . . and fight to the last man to
keep any invading force away.
He said Japan's new American-
equipped and trained armed forces
are "preparing for any situation
we 'might have to face."
Asked how soon Japanese forces
would be capable of facing an en
emy, the one-time lawyer answer
ed, "you might say we are climb
ing Ml. Fuji at the halfway mark."
Japan is aiming next year for a
' 160.000-man ground force, about a
lS.OQO-man air force with U.' S.
F-86 Sabreiets and a 422-vesscl
navy of around 23.000 men.

board and added a few words
sentiment about giving to Wit
have-nots on the day of Christ";
birth.
Cole's printer struck oft a thou
sand copies and Co!e sent a few
to his friends and offered the res;
for sale in his shop. They are the
earliest examples of the now-familiar
Christmas card that have
come to light.
Vast Collection
Some of Cole's cards are includ
ed in a vast Hallmark collection
of relics in the card business, dis
played at the Washington Post
and Times-Herald book fair going
on here.
The idea of folding cards is not
new. Back in the 1870's there was
an unusual card about Robin Hood
and his "quest for a yuletide din
ner." The card was folded into
four sections and during the un
folding a story was told with the
third section showing the dinner
being served and the last showing
the diners dancing in glee after a
lull meal.
The cards for this yule season
don't go too far afield from the
Originals. Both contemporary and
modern art are prominent, but
the emphasis seems to lean to the
real story of Christmas. Scenes of
Bethlehem, carol singers and the
like.
Familiar Swihh
We still find snow scenes, like
we do in the "over the hills and
through the woods to grandmoth
er's house we go" cards that have
been coming out for many years
Santa still is in evidence in
many of the cheaper cards and
some of the more expensive
ones.
Birds, though, seem to be dis
appearing. Half a century ago
they wore much in evidence Gone
also are the silky borders of
fringe, the lace panels and the
gold edging that added up to ele
gance in the old-time cards.
Emphasis this year is mostly
where it should be. On Christmas
itself. The spirit of love and fel

Three scientists of Ohio State
University hadj been hired by the
Air Korcc to do the experiment
ing. The Air Force naturally is in
terested in giving its radio voice
communications the greatest possi
ble clarity.
The normal voice produces
speech by using "a series of cou
pled resonators" namely, the cav
ities of the mouth, the nose, the
larynx, and the pharynx, sr.id Hen
ry M. Moser, John J. Dreher. and
Sol Adler. Not one can be short
circuited out of the coupling with
out muddying speech.
Hcuvy Head Cold
They were particularly emphatic
about the person who can't use his
nasan cavities as one of his resona
tors for his words because he has
a heavy cold.
Nose-talking is all rinht and even
required by some languages othnr
than English, particularly f rencn.
It seems to thin out speech, they
said, but they weren t concerned
with that. Their concern was in
telligibility, and nose - talking def
initely is "detrimental "to it.
They took six Americans who
speak either "eastern" or "general
American" dialects and had them
record long lists of two-dig't num
bers. Some of these speakers were
nose-talkers, some used all their
resonators in proper balancc-:tnd
some had head colds.
Their recordings were rerecord
ed, mixed in with carefully con
trolled amounts of meaningless
noise. Then 11 students at Ohio
State University who had had
some training in distinguishing
among nois-'S henrd altoqotner
were Hamped with headphones
and asked to tell what the speak
ers were sayintf.

Robert Verts is earning a master's
degree from Southern Illinois Uni
versity by turning 900 acres of
ibandonrd strip mining land into
i potential public hunting ground
lent here.
As part of his graduate study,
Verts is maintaining the land, de
veloping it for wildlife and making
a study of game habits and popu
lation. The area already offers a
;ood supply of rabbits, quail and
other small game to hunters who
venture into the forbidding terrain
created by "spoil piles" from
mining operation. i
There is only one level spot in I
the 900 acres a plot of 50 acres
in the middle which was planted
with corn to provide food for the
wildlife. Verts is making a study
there of animal movement in and
out of feeding grounds.
There were 58.000.000 motor ve
hicles registered in the United
States in 1954. By 1956 it is be
lieved there will be 81,000,000.
