Revenge-Bent
Navy To Play
Notre Dame
By .JOII.V GRIFFIV
l.'iiitL-d VrvH Sports Writer
How well the trainers do their
last-minute patching jobs today on
a number of injured stars may
very well decide the winners in
several of Saturday's biggest col
lege football games, like Navy
Notre Dame and Michigan-Iowa.
For example, if the bruised thigh
of Notre Dame quarterback Paul
Hornung doesn't respond well, the
Fighting Irish may fail as six point
favorites and lose to revenge-bent
Navy for the first time since 1941
And the key Big Ten battle be
tween Michigan and Iowa, which
win oe nationally televised, may
depend, on how healthy are tlv
most-highly publicized stars of
each team end Ron Kramer of
Michigan and guard Cal Jones of
Iowa. Michigan, rated the nation s
No. 1 team anu batlting desperate
ly to hold onto that rank is u
seven-point favorite.
No such problems appear to be
set -Maryland and Oklahoma, the
two mignty grid machines that are
pressing Michigan hard for the
national leadership. Both seeming
ly could miss a man or two this
week, Jor Maryland is rated
a whopping 27-point favorite over
South Carolina in an Atlantic Coast
Conference clash and Oklahoma,
ranked No. 3 nationally, is picked
by a similar sum over Kansas
State to take another step toward
the Big Seven championship and
the Orange Bowl.
UCLA, ranked No. 5, is the
week's most lopsided- favorite at
35 points over California. Mich
igan State, No. 6, is only a three-
point choice over .Wisconsin
both battle to stay on Michigan's
heels in the Big Ten race. Auburn,
No. 8, is rated 13 points over
Tulane in its drive toward its first
Southeastern Conference crown.
Southern California, which
shares the No. 8 ranking, also is a
13-poinl choice for its invasion of
Minneapolis for the day's biggpjt
intersection game, shooting Jon
Arnett, the nation's leading scorer,
against Minnesota. Texas A&M,
No. 10, is only a seven - point
pk-k over Arkansas in the key
southwest Conference t batUe at
Fayetteville. Ark. '

were both suffering from the flu
Thursday and may not see much
action against Redmond tonight in
Bend's final game at Bruin field.
Both players missed practice yes
terday and are on tho doubtful
list.
Otherwise the Lava Bears are in
fine shape. Scrimmages were good
this week and the entire coaching
staff is confident the team has re
covered from its mid-season slump
against North Salem and Lebanon.
The team to a man has not for
eotien last vear when Bend got
bounced by Redmond. 12 to 6. and
is hopeful of getting revenge this
time. With a dry field in prospect,
ered from injuries to see consid'
ernble action in the traditional
clash.
No changes are planned in the
Panther starting lineup by coaches
Don Campbell and Harry GobeJ-i
man, although several players
have been working out at different
positions in this week s Qruls;
The game will be the last on
Bruin field for senior starters An

John, Cruickshank. Gary Gentry,
Norman Pease, Shelby Bievins,
Denny Lenaburg, and Denny

In the event that Anderson and
Cruickshank aren't able to play
Lenaburg or Dick Burse will take
over at the flank, and Thompson
will handle the pivot post.
