MOCANN United Press Staff Correspondent The myth that Martin Bormann, deputy chief of the Nazi Partv. was still alive has died at last. But it was a long time dying. The (ate of other high Nazi lead ers had long been known. It had been established beyonc possibility of doubt that Adolf Hit ler shot himself, even though there was no eye-witness account of bis death unul last week end. Heinrich Himmler, "Hangman Himmler," chief of the gestapo. disposed of himself by biting on cyanide capsule hidden in nu mouth after his capture by the British, in northwestern Germany. Hermann Goering, air lore j chief, killed himself in his cell in Nuernberg a lew minutes before his scheduled hanging. He, too, had managed to conceal a suicide capsule. Paul Josepn uocDbels, tne twist ed little propaganda minister, pois oned himself, his wife and their tnree children in a room of the Berlin Reichschancellery air raid shelter in which Hitler died. Remained With Hitler Bormann, too, had remained with Hitler until the last. Jt had been established that after Hitler's suicide Bormann tried to escape from Berlin while the Russians shot their way toward the chancellery. There were reports that he had been killed. But there was nothing definite. For years, Bormann was report ed alive. He was reported to be living in disguise as a peasant in Germany. He was reported living in Spain. He was reported living in Buenos Aires, and in the remote sheep ranching country of southern Argentina. Because his death could not be established, Bormann was sen-; tenced to death in his absence by the Nuernberg war crimes tribun al which also condemmed Goering and other big Nazis. It was not until Hitler's vale: Hans Linge was freed by the Rus sians during the week end that the death of Bormann was confirmed Saw Bormunn Die Linge told how he saw Bormaiu get into a tank, saw the tank hit by an anti-tank shell, saw It burn until those m it were incinerated Thus the record of the Nazi lead ers is complete at last. Bormann was one of the Nazi big lour, along with Hitler, Gotr ng and Himmler. But he was almost unknown out iide Germany. He liked to work under cover and almost never spoke in public. He was an army private during world war I, took part in Nazi like terrorist organizations oftc tne war, and was an early member of the Nazi Party. He was its press chief for a while. But he was named to the commanding staff vi mi; pjfizi storm troopers and neipea to betray his chief Ernst Koehm m the "blood purge" of 1934. Hitler made him deputy fuehrer in me iazi Party June 5, 1941, after Rudolph Hess flew to Senr. land in an insane attempt to in duce Britain to surrender. The news that he is relly dead is welcome. PHONE IN YOUR CLASSIFIED ADS By TOM NKKSON United Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO (UP) The chairmen of the Republican and Democratic national committees sluERCd,jMmt verbally Friday night in a pre view of 1956 campaign issues. Republican Chairman Leonard V. Hall and Democratic Chairman Paul M. Butler locked horns in a debate centered around "peacw and prosperity" before 1.600 mem bers of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce. Judging by the applause, the bout was a draw. Butler, leading oil 25 minute.; of prepared statements and rebuttal by each opponent, accused the GOP of doing a "huckster Job of selling peac?. The Democrats, he said, had njt wanted to make foreign policy an issue in the coming presidential campaign, "but when' the Repub licans try to sell it as an exclu sive Republican product, the Dem ocrats have no choice but to meet this in rebuttal with facts." For all practical purposes, the war in Korea had stopped lor before the truce, he said. Hall countered that "peace and prosperity" was a factual accom plishment of the Kisenhower ad ministration and added: "I challenge any Democrat to show where we had prosperity under Democrats which was with out war or preparation for war." Besides, Hall said, Communis! domination of many countries in creased under the Democrat.. The chairmen also clashed on the issue of big business in gov ernment, farm policy, Geneva, and economic controls. Here's the box score: Butler: "The Eisenhower Cab inet is made up solely of repre sentatives of super big business. The stockholder is enjoying pcx neritv but the farmer isn't." Hall: "Have w- reached the iwint where success is a badge ofjrw dishonor? Actually the Democrats i originated the idea of getting meii;?ni snvim - b rfnlhr.' i-!ti.i in a-yo;ir men during the war." Butler: "All en.
