Directions Given
For Ascorbic Acid
se In Canning
Many homfmakors an inti-rosl-
ed in use of asrorbic acid in can
ning, but are confused about the
amount to buy when required to
translate their needs into milli
grams, according to Miss L. Mil
dred Wilson, home economics ex
tension agent.
The addition of small amounts of
ascorbic acid (vitamin C) U cut
fruits when canning lends to pre
vent surface darkening and off
flavor in the top layers of such
canned fruits, It was explained. In
the quantities used ascorbic acid
does not change the flavor, odor,
or appearance of the canned fruit.
It is not a preservative.
Ascorbic acid in powder or tab
let form is available at some mar
kets and locker plants, and at drug
stores. Tablets are usually of 2"i,
50, or 100 milligram size. About
200 to 300 milligrams usually are
used for each quart of fruit. To
get the full effect when using the
tablets It is best to crush them
ind dissolve the 200 to 300 milli
grams in a tablespoon of water
before adding to the quart jar of
fruit, Add sirup as usual.
If powdered ascorbic acid is
'sed, dissolv Yn teaspoonful in a
little water and add this to each
quart of sirup which is to be used
on the fruit. The ascorbic acid
should be prepared in small quan
tities and only just before the sirup
is to be used in the jars.
Mud stains on play clothes
should be allowed to dry before
trying to remove them. Then,
brush all the loose particles off
and wash the garments in soap
find water.

WASHINGTON (UP) Scientists
insisted today that U.S. work on
an earth-circling satellite is part of
an international scientific venture
and not an effort to beat Russia
into outer space.
The Defense Department, in an
nouncing Thursday that "work has
begun" on. the U.S. project, called
this country's satellite "the first
man-made" satellite. The depart
ment said the United States would
launch 10 of the gravity - defying
spheres, using triple-stage rockets.
But Russia has claimed It also
is working on a man-made satel
lite. It announced shortly after the
White House first disclosed the
U.S. project last July 29 that So
viet scientists hoped to have their!
satellite space - bound wihin IS
months.
If that aim were achieved, the
Soviet body would be circling the
earth six months before the first
U.S. satellite Is scheduled to be
blasted off about the beginning of
the Iternational Geophysical Year.
The geophysical year opens July,
1957.
Scientific Purpose Only
Scientists conceded the first U.S.
satellite may be launched before
the target date. But if it is, scien
tists insisted, the purpose will be
Scientific and not to calim a first
over Kussia in man s initial s?cp
to break the space barrier.
Scientists involved in the project
said no speed-up has been ordered
in launching plans because of Rus
sian claims about the Soviet sat
ellite. But it was known that U.S.
scientists have tended to tak h
Russian announcemen with a
grain of salt.
The Defense Department's an
nouncement Thursday strips some
of the secrecy away from the U.S.
satellite. The department disclosed
that the basketball - sized sphere
will be shot into space by a triple
sage rocket which will thrust the
satefli,te upward at the fantastic
speed of 18,000 miles per hour -a
speed suffiefnt to offset th earth's
gravitational pull.
To Circle Earth
When in its elliptical orbit, the
satellite will circle the earth once
every one or two hours for sev
eral days at distances ranging
from 200 to 800 miles from earth.
Gradually it will be brought closer,
to the earth through the slight drag
of the earth's atmospere and fi
nally disintegrated like a shooting
star.
The principal contracts for Initial
work on the satellite went to two
firms which played an important
rol in earlier rocket research. The
Glenn L. Martin Co. of Baltimore
was awarded the prime contract
for a major part of the project
development of the rocket launch
ing vehicle. General Electric Co.
will supply the rocket motor which
will be used In the initial push of
the satellite away from the earth's
surface.
