Interesting line of thought behind
the "zebra formation" J;eon
Slate used for two plays against
Stanford. Tiie formation had Bea
vers si rung out from one sideline
to the other. The first time the
Orange shifted into it, Stanford
immediately called time out to de
vise u defense, and while the Bea
vers never made a lot of yardage
off it, it served its purpose as fa
as Coach Tommy Prothro wa j con
cerned reporls Chris Kowitz in the
Corvnllis Gazette Times.
His primary pui"jxw was to give
Stanford and other scouts some
thing lo take back home and worry
over.

romis between halves."
"By running one play from the
zebra formation in the first half,"
Prothro continues, "we forcfd
Stanford coaches to spend a part
of- those precious six minutes dis
cussing a defense for that parti
cular fomation. We figured if Stan
ford spent three minutes talking
ibout our zebra formation, they'd
have only three minutes to go oven
everything else that h team nor
mally discuss at halftime.
Prolhro added that scouts from
future opponents would take back
notes on the zebra formation.
"When they get home and study
their diagrams and realize the 20
or M- different things that
might do from that formation, they
?ire going to do some worrying
The coaches will spend maybe r
whole practice period working or
ri defense for that particular form
ation. That gives them just that
much less time to do the things
that they would normally do in pre
paring to play us." .
Prothro didn't say whether or
not he planned to use the zebra
formation in any urlber games
(his year.
Incidentally tKe Beavers went in-
i to the Stanford (tame wilh only 13
running plays. However Prolhro
plans to add nnolher one or two.
As far as passing goes, the Orange
have eight pass palterns. Kafh
naltern has four variations in
biocking assignments and passer's
movements.

UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, Eu
gene (Spcc.al) For the fourth
straight K'imc, Oregon's Ducks
will head into a game heavily out
weighed in bolh the line and back-
field. Coach Len Casanova's Ducks
will meet the University of Colo
rado in the first Eugene game of
tne season for the Webfoots, Sat
urday afternoon.
Being outweighed will be noth
ing new to the Ducks this year,
battling the bulk in alt three of
their previous games, against Utah,
USC and Washington. The Buff;
will carry a stalling lineup to the
Eugene fracas that averages 20
to the man, and a five pound
heavier 210 for each of the line
men. Colorado Strong
Colorado, under Dal Ward, has
possibly its best team in severa
years. They are heavily favored
in the Big Seven conference. With
depth to go along with the size.
Ward has been alternating two
complete units thus far this sea
son.
Biggest men on the Buffalo ros
ter and likewise 1n the starting
'incup are tackles Sam -Salerno,
VI, and Di'-k Holder 221. Com
pared ,to Ihe Colorado average,
Oregon will start .a line that figures
199 to the man and a backfield
tha a""nes IHO.
, Dueks Rely on Speed
Whn t I he Webfoots lose
weight, they hope to pick up in
backfield speed and overall team
speed. Jim Shanley, Dtck James
and J'i'ek Moris have been cutting
some fancy and lightning-like paths
through the first three Duck games
and should offer Colorado some
thing to chase. Likewise in th
line, Oregon has formidable speed.
with four of thn first stringers
converted backfield men from high
school.
Biggest weakness thus far in Ihe
Orecon attack tyis been a lack of
passing lo balance what Casanova
believes to be the besl running at
tack at Oregon in several years.
" "The halftime intermission is !.
minutes," Prolhro explained.
Teams spend hIkhiI ihree minutes
going to the dressing room and
three minutes returning to the
rjeld. They like lo gel back out on
the field about three minutes be-
rore the start of the spcoiui hnlf
That gives them just six minute
in the privacy of their dressing
