imated $000,000. and he figured
additionally that at least $50,000
worth of tickets already had been
sold in outside consignments.
Pre-Hultle Statement
Coincident with their arrivals,
each issued a pre-battle statement
in which he predicted victory.
Moore declared, "I've said a lot
of things about Rocky and this
fight, and I meant every one of
them." He apparently referred to
his charge that Rocky was not
merely a rough fighter but a foul
fighter.
Rocky, denying, said, "I've
never been a dirty fighter. Noth
ing, not even the heavyweignt
title, would make me stray from
the way my parents trained me."
Archie clinched the shot at Mar
ciano by outpointing big Nino
Vardes, then top heavyweight con

out middleweight champion Bobo
Olson in June.

Yankees Hoping
To Clinch Flag
Against Senators
By t'KKD DOWN

The New York Yankees aimed
:oday for a quick end to the
American League pennant race
serene in the knowledge that
leither the Cleveland Indians noi
Hurricane lone can do muchabout
it.
The Yankees' immediate objet
'ive was a three-game sweep of
ihe Washington Senator a feat
vhich would clinch Casey Sten
iel's sixth flag in seven years
should the Indians lose their Iwo
lame series with the Chicago
White Sox.
fn Chicago, AL President Wi!
Harridup assured all the interest
ed parties that Hurricane lone
?an't give anyone an unfair advan
tage even if the Yankee-Senator
series becomes disrupted. Har
ririge announced that any post
poned games having a bearing on
the race would be played after the
season.
Out For A Sweep
With this knowledge, Stengel
was sending Don Larsen and his
two star southpaws, 17-game win
ner Whitey Ford and 16-game win
ner Tommy Byrne, out for a sweep
in Washington.
The Yankees were theoretical;,
crippled by the loss of centerfield
or Mickey Mantle and shortstop
Phil Rizzuto as well as Bill Skow
ron's broken toe but once again
Stengel's bench strength should be
adequate to meet Ihe emergency.
A Yankee outfield of Elston How
ard, Irv Noren and Hank Bauer is
probably as good as any other in
the league. Gerry Coleman fills in,
adequately for Rizzuto and
Collins has been ' more efiective
than Skowron in recent weeks any
how.
At Chicago, the Indians start
their series' with the White Sox
tonight striving to snap a four-
game losing streak but they'll be;
running into two of the toughest!
pitchers in the circuit for them toi
beat. It'll be Billy Pierce tonight
and Jack Harshman Wednesday.
