(CP) The single wing, under which Oregon Si Hit knew its greatest days of f out ball, is being restored by Coach Tommy Prothiu and the students aiv u hooping it up over the;r "new deal." They would just as soon forget sbout las: year when the Beavers wound up in a tie with Washington for last place in ttie Pacific Coast JOHN WITTE Army vet ready for duty Conference cellar while compiling a 1-8 mark under La Verne (Kip) Taylor and his well-dented T for mation. Taylor and the T were replaced in February by Prothro, who was P.ed Sanders No. 1 assistant at UCLA and took part in master minding the Bruins to a 61-0 romp t ver OSC last year for the worst defeat in Corvallis annals. Prothro is keeping mum on what he expects to accomplish since crossing to the other side of the field but a spokesman for the ath letic department says, "We're op timistic. OSC should be a little stronger this fall and consider ably stronger next year. Every one knows Tommy will do the job but nobody expects miracles of him in one year." Vie general feeling is tliat the Mrgle wing fits the material bet ter, even if it is brand new to the returning contingent which includes 2b lettermen. One basic change will send Ray Westfall, last year's sophomore quarterback, into the tailback spot and Prothro thinks the learn will be strong there. Dick Mason, who led OSC in ground gaining last year. Is lo be -spotted at. wing back The Beavers look strongest at the tackles, despite the departure 01 Ron Ashbacher. John ttitte, a lelterman. is rejoining the team .ifter two years in the service. He will handle the job along with i toward Buettgenach, another reg ular. Bob Riggert, who played a lot of ball at guard, also will be back. Easier Schedule Prothro's biggest worry up front is at center. And at the ends. He 4. as to find replacements on the wings for Laird Brattain and Wed Ediger who are gone. Joe Francis, a tailback, heads n solid group of sophomores andj is expected to give Westfall a tough argument for the job. Sam Wesley, another second year man. also could give the veteran Mason some trouble at wingback. The schedule seems easier with such brutal interactional foes as vlinnesotu and Nebraska not slat ed this season. The Beavers have an all conference calendar with Hie exception of Brlgham Young where they open Sept. 17. The schedule: Sept. 17 Brigham Young. Sept. 24 Stanford at Portland. Oct. 7 at UCLA. Oct. 15 at College of the Pa- cific. Oct. 2 Washington State. Oct. 29 at Washington. Nov. 5 Idaho. Nov. 12 at California. Nov. 19 at Oregon. Neither "Sunny Jim" Fitzsim- mons, Nashua's handler, nor Mes- chach Tenney, trainer of Swaps, would predict that a world recon' would he broken in the mile and one quarter gallop, each under 125 pounds. Then it would be Arcaro's problem to rate his horse close enough to the front-runner to pun ahead in the final sixteenth. The winner of the race was ex pected to be acclaimed both ns three-year-old of the year and horse of the year. Swaps has been- unbeaten In eight three-year-old starts and Nashua has won eight of nine starts, losing only to Swaps in the Kentucky Derby. In comparative times for the mile and a quarter distance, Swaps had the edge.
