Cardinals Facing Worst Finish In 36 Seasons By IMIKI) I'KKNH The once-proud St. Louis Cardin als, now hopelessly bogged down deep in seventh place, face their worst finish in 36 years. Not since 1919 have the Cardin als wound up as low as seventh but they don't promise to wind up any higher this year the way they sre performing now. Thursday night's 5-3 defeat at the hands of Milwaukee was the 18th setback in the last 27 games for the forlorn Cardinals, who have watched every club in the National League, except Pitts burgh, pass them by. Oddly, it was Branch Rickey, current gen eral manager of the PirHtes, who managed the last Cardinal team to finish seventh. Cardinal owner Gussie Busch has indicated there will be a "ma jor turnover" in the club this win ter but opposing hitlers are get ting in their licks against the pre sent St. Louis pitchers while they can. Rookie Chuck Tanner and Bill Bruton of the Braves each con nected for homers against loser Larry Jackson Thursday night, j making a total of 147 home runs: highest in the league that have been hit off Cardinal hurling this year. Southpaw Warren Spahn went the route for the second time in four days to register his 12th victory. He beat the cards, 12-1 in the opening game of the series Monday. Itedlegs Nip CuhH Cincinnati regained fifth place bv nipping Chicago, 2-1. smooth six-hit pitching effort by Art Kowler. The Redlegs put to gether singles by Our Bell, Chuck Harmon, Rocky Bridges and Roy McMillan for their runs in the sixth off Paul Minner. Dee Fonriy tngled home the only Cub run in the eighth. 1 The league-leading Dodgers, who had lost two games in a row to the Giants, jumped on them for an 8-! victory despite homers by Whitey Ixu'kman and Rid Gordon. Brooklyn knocked out Jim Hearn with a three-run burst in the open ing frame, went ahead T-0 when Don Iloak slammed a two - run homer in the second inning and then added three more runs with the help of Willie Mays' three base error in the fourth. Reliever Don llesseer was credited with his fifth ietory as the Dodgem remained 14 games ahead of the second place Braves. The Phillies and Pirates were not scheduled. Rained out of their scheduled ir.nme with the lien Jinx, me lot" Yankees stayed one game In front in the American League race when the second-place White Sox split a doubleheader with the Athletics. In the only other game sched uled, the Indians defeated the Tl gers, ii-S, to snap a tlhree-gamo losing streak and climb within three percentage points of the White Sox. Southpaw Herb Score, the major league strikeout leader, fanned lit baiters in increasing his season total to 102. Two errors in the eighth inning helped the In dians rally for four runs.
