Mint Raisers Set Organization In Mid-Oregon Special to The Bulletin ' REDMOND A group of earnest mint raisers, looking to expansion of their product in this area, met in Redmond Friday night to or ganize the Central Oregon Mint Growers Association. Most of those present were from Jefferson couu. ' ty. Their chief objective is to form a quarantine area comprising land within the boundaries of Jefferson. Crook and Deschutes counties for the purpose of keeping out of the area diseased root stalks of any kind, particularly nematodes and Canadian thistles. They named al so the specific diseases of rus', blight, root rot, and all pests, and made a further stipulation that all equipment that has handled mint from outside the area must be fu migated before it comes into the quarantine area. Arthur Stevens, Madras, acted as chairman at the organization meeting held in tiie Oregon Potato Commission office. Elected presi dent of the group is Herman Keep er of Culver and Jefferson. There is at present no vice - president, and the secretary-treasurer will be Jefferson county agent Jack Ross. He was unable to attend Friday night, but Deschutes county agent Gene Lear was present for most of the meeting. On the board will be Harry Dinkel and Sid Elliott, Culver, and Arthur Yungen, Mad ras. Meeting Una The producers are anxious to make their quarantine regulations effective by September 1 if pos sible, but no later than October 1. Keeper is to appoint immediately two members from the group to meet with chief of the division of plant induslry of the state, Frank MeKinnon in Salem, to set up and activate the organization. Advisors are to be Lindsay Loring, plant pathologist with URDA, plant path ologist Dr. Jack Horner of OSC, and the three counly agents. While the initial meeting sought the as sistance of OIC administrator Ben Davidson because of his past ex perience in setting up quarantines, Davidson advises that from here on it is "really a county agents' function" lo assist Willi the new organization. The association, for growers of both peppermint and spearmint, al so discussnl self - financing for what modest funds will be needed at the outset. They will look to the state department of agriculture for help in sustaining and enforc ing the quarantine, although mem bers also expect to do a lot of their own voluntary police work in protecting what they hope Is an expanding agricultural industry for Central Oregon. Markets for the mint such as candy and chew ing gum manufacturers and ex tract processors, should require large amounts of locally raised mint. A price system, not under the quarantine, was discussed and will receive further study, as well as the problem of procuring goo, I root stalks. The president is to call the next meeting when deemed necessary. Father Visited By Serviceman Vernon R.
