Jackson, editor of the San Fran cisco Chronicle's book reviews lor 25 years, suffered a stroke Thurs day while tape recording a book review for the National Broadcast ing Company radio show "Mom tor." He did not regain conscious ness before he died. Jackson, an author as well as critic, came to San Francisco in 1920. He edited Sunset Maga zine from 1926 to 1928 and served briefly as literary editor of the San trancisco Argonaut, a weeklv.l liefore joining the Chronicle staff. As a literary editor. Jackson understood his job in a wider I sense than merely commenting on! new books. In the tradition of Am brose Bierce, Bret Harte and Rrtbert lxuis Stevenson, all, like Jackson, San Franciscans by adop tion, he explored California's lit erary resources both old and new. His works included: "Anybody's Gold," "Notes on a Drum," "Con tinent's End," "Extra, Extra," Mexican Interlude," "Gold Rush Album," "Bad Company," "My San Francisco," and "Christmas Flower."
