July 15,- 1955 Canyon Transportation HELLS CANYON, Oregon - WunhinKton - ItUlio TBore are only two meant) of trannportation in and out of niJ.Ht of the ranches and other sites located in the bottom oCthis long deep canyon, boat and air. A few, but very few, can be reached by torturous iiijlomobilc roads, but to all intents and purposes the boat is.the only way. Farm land is at such a premium that few p(Sple want to devote any holdings to the necessary land f(0- an airstrip. Then, too, many of the available flat afleas are too short for safe landings and takeoffs. And there are darned few flat spaces. Z That leaves boats. Z One the one on which the press party viewing Pa cific Northwest Power company sites in the big canyon o the Snake river travelled has become well known over the years, having made over 500 trips from I.ewis lofl, Idaho, up the river and back. ; It's the Wcnaha, the famous mail boat of the Snake, wiich starts a run each Wednesday morning up the river wth mail, express, freight and supplies for upstream res i(fents. The trip up and back lakes two days, and the boat (luring the summer usually has about a dozen tourists aCing to view the wonders of the great gorge. Ours, was a Chartered trip, no mail stops. Z To be blunt about it, the Wenaha is not a beautiful cfltft, excepting perhaps to her owners and crew mem bers. Z She is 52 feet long and has a beam of slightly over 32 feet, which gives her a fine roll in some of the bigger! rirpids. Power is furnished by two big marine die.sels pushing the craft along with the strength of .'!.'!() horses. - In slack water she cruises at about J 4 knots, but tKere'g no slack water in Hells Canyon. Top speed is 1!) kiols. - To illustrate the force of the current, imagine only coVering 80 miles in 15 hours. That's what the Wenaha rifles on the way up the river. Coming down she makes ttte same trip in fewer than six hours. Captained by a stocky fellow named Oliver McNabb who knows the channel of the Snake heller than he knows his own house's floor plan, the Wenaha purrs up stream from Lewiston at a pretty good clip until she Begins to hit the rapids that account for nearly six him flred feet of change in elevation in the canyon. Under McNabb's skillful handling the boat sticks her nose into ft big rapid she draws only 20 inches of water so there's little or no danger of scraping the but ton! excepting in the shallower places near the start of fjic trip and begins to push. Z Some of the rapids members of our party hit were strong and so fast that the boat made progress at a nito of only 15 or 20 foot each minute. Between the rap Mis she shoved along much faster. Z Contrary to what you might expect, you don't dare Ccoast" on the way downstream. If you did you'd soon Qirn sidewi.se and get into trouble. ; So coming back down the craft heads into the rap jjls at the same speed, only this time you have a strong current at your back instead of pushing against your Cow, For a real "shoot the chute" ride, however, you Eavcn't really lived until you meet Dan Cole. He operates 3 big 16-foot skiff, powered with not one but two out board motors, each delivering 25 horsepower. Some of us on the trip took a little ride with llan. Ho more than proved his statement that he can average 55 miles an hour going upstream, rapids and all, and around 45 coming down. It was the kind of thrill thai (Junes but once in a lifetime, even if you did have a sort tjf hollow feeling way down deep inside after it was all over. Hut whether you are "lucky" enough to ride with flan on his invitation only, his boat isn't for hire or the Wenaha, you come away from the trip with one feel pig for sure. " A good boat, ill the hands or a competent boatman, can do u lot of things you never believed possible. . J r ... Ml - 4 'xr !, THE MAIL BOAT "WENAHA" plunges into a big rapid on tha Snake River. In the field of disarmament. however, there seems to be some chance of limited agreement to improve a situation which is a heavy burden to the United States and. perhaps, an impossible burden to the Soviet Union. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles told a House subcommittee last month that the Soviet Union economy "is on the point of col lapsing.' There have been other it less official suggestions that Mos cow's more or less new diplomatic look is caused by an urgent neces sity to turn some of the Commu nist world productive facilities awav from armaments and toward the higher, living standards of a peacetime economy. If all of that is accurate, Mos cow is eager for at least n limited slowdown in arms spending. The taxpayers of the United States itn- questionably would welcome less I expensive national defense and it would delight the Eisenhower ad ministration which is baffled and may finally be embarrassed by in ability to balance the budget. So a cut in arms spending i something the two great powers really would welcome. On thai basis, the administration has put disarmament at the top of its G'1- neva objectives, instead of making more fundamental political adjust menls the top objective No arms limitation agreement is expected from Geneva, however. More likely the powers might agree to a new start toward that objective. Thev might direct the United Nations subcommittee which long has wrangled over the problem to back up and start over in a spirit of more determined intent and better faith. Some actual limitation miirht even be agreed on within 12 or 18 months under such conditions, but not quickly enough to reduce U.S. taxes soon nor immedialely to im prove the Russian living standard Collapsing or not, the Commu nist economy lags behind the Wes: in the standard to which its pro- ilisarmament and relaxed trade strietions.
