Famed Paris Comedie Francaise is Sending Company to New York Bv ELIZABETH 1 OOSIEY Lnited Vrmn Statf Correspondent NEW YORK (UP) For the first time in its 300 vear history the famed Comedie Francaise will send, a company of a tors and ac ti esses here next fall to appear on Broadway. The month's engagement not only will set a record for the proud theatrical troupe which traces its traditions back to Mo liere but it also will set a unique record for Mony Dalmes, beauti ful blonde star of the Comedie. Mademoiselle Dalmes and her husband Claude Phillipe, known unofficialy as the "host of the Waldorf," will be working on the some side of the ocean for the lirst time in their three-year mar riage. Theirs is a strictly 20lh century love story, with scores of ocean crossings, trans-atlan'ie telephone calls and airmail letters to bridge the gap between their two widely separated careers. Philippe is vice president in charge of the vast network of kitchens, dining rooms and private banquet rooms at the Waldorf AS' toria Hotel. Annual Visit Mrs. Philippe, as tiie French ac tress prefers to be called when she's on this side of the Atlantic, a "societaire" of the Comedie. She is here now on her annual spring visit. She explained some of the tradi tions of the Comedie, which is un like any other acting group in the world, in an interview interrupted ippc rushed in the suite they occu-r-y in the hotel. kis.-;cd his wife oi; the cheek, disappeared for only a few minutes into the bedroom and reappeared completely chanced from business suit to evening clothes. "That is all I eve see of my; husband in the day when I am' hero," Mrs. Philippe said as hel blew her a kiss and siammed the door behind him. "In Paris it is I who rush all the time." As Mony Dalmes, this port French actress may play leading rcles in a tragedy, a comedy and a fantasy in a single week at one of the two Paris theaters operated by the Comedie Francaise. The Comedie is dedicated to keepinf alive old plays and traditions as well as introducing n?w plays. Like others in the troupe, Mrs. Philippe began as a "pension naire," or apprentice when she graduated from dramatic school eight years ago. She has since been elected a "societaire." which is the elite heart of the troupe en titled not only to the major roles but to a share in the profits. "The rules are -very strict," Mrs. Philippe said. "It is unlike any other acting company. You cannot do a movie or play in an other theater without getting per mission, and often that is difficult to get. I asked for permission be fore I came here to visit my hus band." They will do five plays in their engagement, here from Oct. '2b to Nov. 20, and also in appearances in. Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa and Quebec, Canada. Mony Dalmes will play the leading role in the open ing night Broadway performance oi Moliere's "Le Bourgeois Gcnlil hommc' ' (The Wou'.d-be Gentleman.) The plays chosen for the Ameri can appearance provide plenty of humor and action, a spokesman for Sol Hurok explained, just in case some people don't understand French. "Sometime," the freneh st;if;e could play a part here on your stage in English. But it would have to be a part willi an accent. Arrywav, coming here to work will be wonderful. It v. ill be better lor me to Im? busy. Now my lite ir. America is waiting lor my husband." Wo Trade for ANYTHING of Value ! HUDSON CO.;ODORE "8" SPECIAL Kinllo, heater, llyilrahiala.
