Are You A Hammer And Saw Carpenter?
Durlns World War One wlten army cantonmenls needed to be built immediately,
many who had no knowledge of carpentry or no apprenticeship In the carpentry
trade, procured a hammed and saw and flocked to points where carpenters were so
badly needed and hired out as such. Because they had no trainiii"; in the trade and
because the money Mpent on wages paid to them was largely wasted they were
dubbed "hammer and saw car ie liters."
A skilled carpenter knows how to saw each piece and fit it into the whole pat
tern. He knows the skills necessary to prejiare each section of the building and there
fs no waste motion to his work. He builds so that the building, when com pie fed, will
be staunch and durable yet possess lines of beauty.
An informed parent builds character In his children, as well as himself, so that
each trail fits into the pattern of a useful and God-like life. The pieces are sawed or
molded, if you will, to fit God's pattern. To learn this trade of character hiiilding he
attends church each Sabbath.
If you would be a carpenter, study under a skilled carpenter. If you would build
character, study under the Builder of the Universe at the church of your choice.
