Air Force Sets
Policy, Effective on July I
All military service veterans, i
discharged since July 1951 wilt
find that many occupational skills)
and technical knowledge acquired
through such service are in great;
demand by the Air Force.
Starting July 1, the Air Force
will put into operation a new pol
icy which establishes a grade
scale for enlistment and reenlist-
ment for all prior service person
nel. The grade scale will be based
on technical skills and grade held
at time of discharge.
A choice of area or base assign
ment is also part of the new pol
icy which favors the discharged
veterans. In some cases it carries
provisions whereby veterans may
elect re-enlistment for a specific
overseas theatre.
The plan was devised to in
crease procurement of the much
needed prior service technician
and to insure assignment where
skills could be used immediately.
Basically, grade determination
will be dependent upon skill, date
of separation, and the need of the
occupational field specialty.
The new plan will be imple
mented at all USAF Recruiting
stations throughout the United
States. Each station will receive
a periodic breakdown of skills
categorized in order of needs. The
breakdown will encompass all oc
cupational skills used in the Air
Force, and will be listed in six
classifications ranging from need
ed to surplus. Those in a surplus

Grade Scale
field can request re-enlistment and
re-training in a needed skill. ,
Veterans having a needed occu
pational skill will benefit most by
the new policy. For some skills
the previous 90 day in grade en
listment time limitation has been
extended considerably. In some in
stances where separation date Is
over 18 months but less than 24,
the veteran can rrenlist and lose
only one grade. Some possessing
particular skills who have been
separated over 42 months but less
than 48 may reenlist with the loss
of only 2 grades if otherwise qual
ified.
In the past very few veterans
received such consideration for in-
grade reenlistment if the time out
of service exceeded 90 days.
T-Sgt. Donald Adams, local Air
Force recruiter, is at the Ameri
can Red Cross office, in Bend,
every Thursday, to interview vet
erans dt siring further information
on the new policy.
