GK.ANT A east of Panorama Players ran t ie gamut from tragedy to broad comedy and back again, in the premier of their " Shakespear ean Sketches," Friday night at Al len Auditorium. The performance consisted of six of the most famous scenes from the pen of the cele brated bard. The s.iow will be re peated tonight, with curtain time it 8:30. The sketch from "Midsummer Night's Dream," in which Lee Paves plays all the parts in the hilarious mechanics' scene, was a high spot in the evening's enter tainment. He switched from one part to another with almost un believable smoothness and defini tion. He was an Elizabethan-type ham who took himself pretty ser iously a lisping fop a froggy voiced dullard a sweet anoV timid young woman and a roaring Hon, in rapid - fire succession. Some times he even created the im pression of being two characters at once. His excellent diction made the dialogue easy to follow Robert Page and Marie Oucllett gave spirited performances both as Petruchio and Katharma scenes from "Taming of the Shrew." and as Othello and Emi lia in "Othello." Both have had wide experience in the theati Gerald Rodgers brightened the "King Lear" sequences with his portrayal of the fool, and he was also convincing as Romeo, in a skit with Lee Paves and Jean Grosvenor as Friar Lawrence and the nurse. Rodgers was also well liked in short singing bits. Miss Grosvenor was lovely as Desdenuma in the famous death scene from "Othello," 'and Page was at lus best uv the dilhcult role of Richard III, the ugly and cruel Duke of Gloucester. The production was given con tinuity with a narrat ion handled well by Richard Larsen. Elaine Flaherty supplied pleasant back ground of piano music. The pro duction was directed by M - m w j i. Thus word is from the county office manager, Donald Greeves. At least two-thirds of the eli gible farmers voting in the refer- Paiiljendum must approve quotas be fore they will continue in effect. Refutes Low Water Rumors SpeclHl to Tho Bulletin (said that Wickiui. held 125.000 acre MADRAS Jefferson county far- feet as of Wednesday morning. mers are still entitled to their announced quota of three acre feet of water an art1", less the amount they have used since April 1, this year. Ben Eviek, chairman of the North Unit 'irrigation district board, made this statement to re fute rumors to the effect that stor age in Wickiup reservoir is dras tically low and that water will be in short supply. Eviek said there is enough wa ter to supply the quotas for North Unit project fanners. Employees at Hie district office Bend Hospital flie following are new patients at St. Charles Memorial hospital: Mrs. Fred Nelson, 322 E. Seward avo.; Mrs. Herman Roland, Gil christ; Charles Jensen, Rt. 3, Bend; Frank Robcck, Rt. 3, Box 43; Joe Stenkymp, 54 Sullivan ave., Bend. - Dismissed on 'rhursaay and Fri day were: William James,' La- Pine; John Ulam, Madras; Wil liam Cavin, Bend; Mrs. Richard Goodwin, Bend; Debra Bergseng, Bend, Billie Mellin, Millican; Mrs. Thea Ogle and Arthur Libby, Bend. Forest Lookouts Spot Aircraft Special to The Bulletin SISTERS-Hinklc Butte and Tu- malo lookouts are again spotting aircraft for the Air Defense fil ter center. The lookouts radio the local State Forestry office which in turn telephones the report to the filter center in Portland until the center in Bend is completed. Donald Denna arrived from Cor- vallis to work as crew foreman at the State Forestry station. Den na and Terry Warner are attend ing the Forest Service Fire school at Pringle Falls for three days, Two fires wery reported in the Squaw Back area on June 22. One lire about one hall acre was trailed and controlled by lute eve ning. The second is an area of approximately two acres. A burn ing fir about fivo feet in diameter caused many spot fires before it was felled. The fire was fairly well controlled by Thursday morn ing. The State Forest Service was assisted by three U, S. Forest Ser vice crewmen on this fire. The crews were hampered by unusual ly strong winds late Wednesday and early Thursday and also were at a disadvantage for the fire was in a slash area. They declined to give the storage figure for the same date of last year, but Aubrey Perry, water-; master at Bend, supplied 168.000 acre feet as the amount of water store in the reservoir June 22, 1954. NUIP waterusers are taking wa ter at the rate of from 2200 to 2300 acre feet ilally, Perry said. This amount of use creates a heavy demand on the reservoir be cause the Little Deschutes river flow has dropped off, . running at about 170 cubic feet per second now as compared with 400 cubic second feet a year ago. Perry explained that when the natural flow is from 400 to 500 cubic feet per second, the demand from the stored water runs at about 500 cubic feet a second When natural flow falls to 50 cu bic feet per second as at present, it means that seme 900 cubic feet ler second must be drawn from the reservoir to keep the canal running full. The 50 cubic feet per second of natural flow going into the North Unit main canal represents the project's share of the 170 cubic leet per second of natural flow The remainder is apportioned to other irrigation districts. The Bend man laid the blame for the present situation on the use of some 20.000 acre feet in March. Wickiup reservoir, although de signed to hold approximately 1S6, 000 acre feet, customarily holds 200,000 acre feet at the beginning of the irrigation season.
