WHAT S COOKING? Befuddled boxer "Biff" couldn't quite figure out what to do when, instead of breakfast, he found four-week-old "Kitchenette" in his food dish in Cleveland, Ohio. With admirable restraint, Biff let his master, Peter La Londe, set things right rather than oust the kitten himself. Weekly Balance Sheet Compares Good, Bad News By CHARLES M. MCCAW llnited PrKs Staff Cormsponfleiit The week's good and bad news on the international balance sheet: The Good 1. Soviet Russia formally ac cepted the proposal of the Western Allies for a Big Four meeting "at the summit."1 Details of the meet ing, first of its kind in 10 years, will be worked out later. The pos sibility was mentioned that Presi dent Eisenhower and the other Big Four chiefs of government might meet July 18. The United States will insist that the meeting be lim ited to a few days. The foreign ministers of the United States, Britain, France and Soviet Russia will be left to negotiate on specif issues later. . 2. There were strong indications that any attempt to swing Italy away from loyal cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organ ization would fail. Considerable anxiety was felt over Italian policy after the election, of leftist-tinged Giovanni Gronchi as president. Gronchi favors a policy of "co existence" with Soviet Russia, But dispatches from Rome suggested that the danger of an Italian swing to the left w.is now remote. The Italian Communists continued to lose strength. They have been los ing their grip on labor unions in northern and central Italy for sev eral months. This week they lost an important union election in southern Italy. 3. The National assembly, lower house of the French parliament, approved by a vote of 404-210 a motion to revise the constitution of the Fourth Republic. It was the first step toward strengthening the authority of French prime minis ters and ending the series of cab inet crises which had weakened France ever since the end of World War II. The Bad 1. Allied leaders were agreed that whatever happened as the re suit of the visit of Soviet Premier Nikolai A. Bulganin and Commu nist Party Leader Nikita S. v Khrushchev to President Tito of Yugoslavia, it would not bo favor able to the West. Tito has said that he will continue to cooperate with the Allies. But the Allies felt ! better while Tito was still feuding with the Soviet bloc of nations. 2. Terrorism in French North Africa reached the crisis level. The French government sent reinforce ments by air. spa and highway to help combat terrorists in Algeria. It was reported that France might even withdraw about 10,000 of the troops it now keeps und.-r the North Atlantic Treaty Organization com mand in order to strengthen its North African forces. 3. American - supported Prem ier Ngn Dinh Diem of the state of Southern Viet Nam. in Indo china delivered an ultimatum to the rebel leaders who threaten M plunge the countyr into op civil war. Diem demanded that they surrender bv Saturday. Whatever the result of the ultimatum, the situation in Viet Nam continued to get progressively worse. The danger intensified that the countiy might fall into the 'iar.ds of the North Viet Nam Communists. I Patients Have Craving for Dirt CHICAGO (UP) They call it1 geophagia, and two Dallas, Tex. radiologists say it apjaienUy is widespread in some areas of north ern and eastern Texas. In plain language, it's the prac tice of eating dirt, Drs. R. S. Clay ton and Paul H. Goodman said. They reported it in an issue of Ra diology and alerted radiological colleagues to watch for X-ray showings of such a diet. Clayton and Goodman, associat ed with the Southwestern Medical School of the University of Texas m Dallas, said they have inter viewed many patients who eat dirt or who have eaten it at some time during their Jives. The craving for dirt is stronger with women than wilh men and is believed the result of a deficiency of certain essential dietary factors, the doctors said. Eating small amounts apparently is not injuri ous, they said. NO CHANttK BOSTON tUP) Waldo llem enway, a Worcester, Mass. con noisseur, recently visited a Bos ton restaurant where he had last dined in 1910. The initials he had carved on the table 45 years ago were still there. ftYNUI-!l OF ANNVAT, PTATKMKNT t'or tlio ycr ended UeecinJier ill, U'il of the MASSACHUSETTS BONDING AND INSURANCE COMPANY in Jo!it Office Kiurc. in 11m Sti Mum Inf r ol Uis ADMITTED ASSETS Bonds H10.
