Uenaral Airiit,
Why aren't the
Trucks Rolling
For the first time in 20 years the trucks of Oregon's motor freight industry
have ground to a halt. They have been stopped by the action of a few Teamster
Union officials.
The beleaguered trucking industry wants Oregon citizens including our
employees, with whom we have no quarrel, and our shippers, whose battle we are
fighting to know WHY we chose to stop in our tracks, stand and fight.
The demands which the Western Conference of Teamster officials have been
insisting that wo "accept as presented" aro 45 in number. Wages alone have not
been the main issue. Includod are the deadly "hot cargo" and "picket line" pro
visions that would turn every common carrier truck line into a union tool against any
business with which any union may have a dispute. The "hot cargo" clause for el
ample would mean that we would be unablo to haul any commodities that union
officials choso to list as "unfair"!
Some not all of the other demands arc:
a. 26 cents por hour increase over a three year contract
b. 10 cents per hour pension plan
c. 33l3 increaso in subsistence pay (from present $4.50 per day)
d. Increase in paid vacations
e. Increase in paid holidays (from 6 to 8)
f. Premium pay for city work beforo 6 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
g. Premium pay for driving certain types and combinations of vehicles
h. Putting an etra man on semi-trailers whether needed or not
i. Etc., etc., etc.
What does this mean to you?
Please bear in mind that from 50 to 62 cents of every dollar of revenue re
ceived by motor carriers are paid out to their employees In wages. While the effect
of these demands would lo some extent be different with each motor carrier, it has
been computod that the direct cost to the employer would, on th average, be over
80 conts an hour, with indirect costs adding to that amount. This would mean, as a
conservative estimate, that at least a 30 increase in motor freight ratos would be
needed to enable the industry to absorb Ihe cost of those demands. Please bear in
mind nlso thai the ' pit let line ' and "hot carqo' provisions would pkit'O Oregon bus-iiip-.-.c;
at the mercy of the foam -.tor Union acjpnK.
Because business cost incroaies are inevitably passed on to the consumer, on
your behalf we have an obligation to resist these demands with all our resources.
And we feel an equal obligation to our employees, if we are able to continue to
pay them a fair wage, run our companies in suxh a manner that their future Job se
curity is assured in fact, if we are to sVy in business we must resist these de
mands. TRUCK OPERATORS

New Electronic Co-Pilot Due
WASHINGTON (UP) The
fighters and bombers produced by
America's aircraft industry fly so
fast that they impose demands
upon pilots that have not been ex
perienced before.
So, to help them out. Planes, of
ficial publication of Aircraft In
dustries Association, reports that
the fiirt-raft electronics industry
lias developed an electronic brain
which will fly "co-pilot" in new su
personic fighters. It's real genius
when it comes to solving intricate
problems that arise with lightning-
like rapidity in modern military
plane. It can do 60,000 additions
or subtractions or 3,000 multipli
cations or divisions in one second.
The new airborne electronic
thinker" was made possible by
the development of tiny-weight
transistors that are replacing th?
heavy old-tyje radio vacuum tubes.
Transistors, though small, are
touh, don't heat up and operate
on about one-twentieth of the: pow
er required by the old vacuum
tube. The new airborne computer
uses about 800 of these transistors
in its ciix'uits.
