I Six-Hit, 6 to 2 Victory Notched By Nevvcombe By MILTON KK'IIMAN United Tretis Sports Writer Big Don Ncwcombe of Brooklyn has fallen into the most mi sera I jL kind of rut imaginable he keeps winning games but losing money. No one is hitting the huge, right handed hist bailer much on the mound these days but he sure is getting belted hard in the pocket book. Take his six-hit 6-2 victory over Pittsburgh Thursday, for example. Ncwcombc figured he had put in a pretty profitable day. After all, he tripled home two runs in the ninth and even stole home stand ing up to nail down his seventh j victory without a loss. L'ion returning to his hotel room however, he learned he had bvn fined $40 fur arguing with umpiie Frank Sccory last Tuesday nignt. 01 course, that line doesn't com pare with Hie 5 100 one tuken out of his last salary cheek for re fusing to pilch batting practice earlier (his month, but cvciy Utile bit hurts. Newcombe, wjio hopes he'll get ail that money back, and Ihen Fome, in tiie form of a World Ser ies' cut, enabled the pace-selling Dodgers to retain their six-game lead over the rampaging Cubs, who beat the Cardinals, 3-0. i The victory, turned in by veter an Howie Pullet, marked the Cubs' j seventh in their last eight games.! Rookie Bob Speake continued his spirited hitting with a homer and a. single tiiat accounted for two of Chicago's runs. 'Ru.kic Marv Blayloek's 11th Inn-' Ing double drove in Roy Smalley liMiii second base and gave the Phillies a four-game sweep over tlie Giants, 3-2. BULLETIN jyr AW a fJ The Bend Bulletin, Friday, May 27, 1955 Auto Racers' 'World Series' Due Monday at Indianapolis By OSCAK Fit ALKY United Jiei Sp-irts Writer INDIANAPOLIS. Ind. fUP) - The Indianapolis 500 is the world series of the uutomobile racin-j;, the big one in which all the lead- foots from the little tracks dream about driving, and you might think H:at the man finally getting his hancc would have butterflies in his belly. It is a man-killer, literally and figuratively. Many a man has died on the brick and asphalt oval where (hey play their mad game against time and, you imagine, the first crack at it would set a rookies nerves to screaming. But Hot Johnny Boyd's, Johnny, a handsome young man of 'JH out of Kresno, Calif., is one of eight first-lime drivers who will be tensed over the wheel when the field of XI cars receives the heart-stopping outer of "Gentle men, start your motors," on Mem- ial Day. And Johnny faces It calmly and philosophically. Veteran Knee Driver have been a race driver for nine years." he explains with a sober light in his brown eyes. 'Don't think I'm cocky, But I have lo believe that I'm a good driver, cap, Yogi Herra hit his 10th humer with two on off Dean Stone in tiie a lead they never lost. I-llslon Howard also homered. Lefty Bob Wiesler started for New York but was relieved in the filth by Jim Konstanty, who was credited with the victory. Beaten by the While S,x. 3-1, in the first game of a doubleheadi.r, Boh Lemon came back with an eight-inning pinch single to gie the Indians a 10-9 triumph in the nightcap. Lemon forced across the winning runs in the sixth timing of (he opener wiien he walked win ning piteher Jack Harshtna and Oliieo Carrasipiel with the bases loaded. In the second game, Nellie Vox of Chicago hit homers in tlie seventh and eighth innings to lie tihe seore fit 9-all, but Lemon dis solved the demliek in the Inst ot I he eighth when he singled home Dave Plulley. Reliever Art lloutte man was the winner. Jim Wilson hurled a (our-hitter and drove in a run himself to lead the Orioles to a L'-O victory over the Red Sox. Leo Kiely was the loser. The "butterflies" were there when he came hopefully into In dianapolis to make his qualifying attempt. As Johnny sees it, he just had to got by "or I couldn't jhavc gone back home." So he took his Surnar Special out there on that sprawling rac: track, dyed with the blood and pit ted by the rended metal of other hopefuls, ami looked disaster sipiaicly in the eye. I He spun out on his first qualify ing attempt, bouncing into the wall on the baekstrcteii at Ki!) miles an hour. "I was lueky," he a d m i ? simply. The car didn't sustain a scratch. Neither did Johnny. So after his pit crew looked it over, .Johnny tooled it out then; again, "flying over the course at that same frantic speed again I'his time he qualified. j "Superstitious As Hell" I We is, he'll concede, "supersti tious as hell." They all are in this business. So when he drives, Johnny has in his pocket a Rosary which he has carried since he waf seven years old. It was In his Docket when he flipped three dif ferent times in three different cars. All ot them were cars with the number "eight" emblazoned on their cowling. No longer will I Johnny drive a car with the num ber eight. Here is a young man who has dug ditches, been an apprentice plumber, serviced tractors, with, time oul to he an air cadet in World War II. His pretty wife ilies in today to watch him make his bid for gold and glory, leaviiv; their two young children back in California. But despite his family obliga tions and the fact that this is his first start at Indianapolis, Johnny isn't worried. "You get more of a thrill," he asserts, "driving on those halt mile banked tracks. They'll reallv t;ive ynt a charge." So facing his great opioi1iinit,.' icainst the finest drivers in tne world leaves Johnny Boyd undis mayed. Not completely, (homrli. "I nuess I am worried." he ad mits, "alvout where I'M finish and how much money I'll make." That's the breed of the daring.
