(UP) D.H Line, owner uf the Line paint com pany here, drowned yesterday evening in the Columbia River while attempting to rescue one of his employes who had fallen from the Umatilla bridge while paint ing. The employe. Ruben Wagner, 22, was suspended ' in a boatswain's chair from the new highway bridge on the Washington side when ropes gave way and plunged him into the stream. He was rescued about 13 minu tes later by an Inland .Navigation company lug, but in the mean time, Line had jumped Into the river from the Washington side to rescue his employe. Witnesses reported that Wagner yelled to Line from the tug that he was all right and that Line turned around and headed for shore. He apparently swam only a few feet and then disappeared un der the water. Wagner was taken to a Hermis- ton hospital suffering from shock, Five small vessels started a search for Line's body. Line, in his mid-50 s, had con tracted to do painting on the re cently dedicated highway bridge spanning the Columbia at Umatilla. Attorney Named To Defend Kent ASTORIA (UP) Attorney Gor- don Sloan was named today to de fend 19-year-old William E. Kent, an AWOL Army private, on a child stealing charge in connec tion with the 40-hour disappear ance of seven -year -old Tommy Woodard. Kent appeared in Justice Court here yesterday and bail was set at $25,000, after the charge was filed by District Attorney Thomas E. Brownhill. Tommy, who diappeared Sun day afternoon, was found early yesterday and directed searchers to a tent where Kent was camped. Sheriff Paul Kearney said he would question the boy further aft er the lad had a chance to rest. Police in Portland said Kent had a juvenile record there. When ar rested yesterday Kent said he had only $20 left out of some $700 re- enlistment money. He said he had been AWOL from Fort Campbell, Ky., since May 10. GOOD IDEA ST. PAUL (UP)-C-ov. Orvillc L. Red Cross Ends Relief Program For Transients The Deschutes county chapter of the American Red Cross finds it necessary to discontinue its relief program for transients, according to announcement by Thomas F. Brooks, chapter president . "The help given on an emer gency basis to transients during the winter has so depleted Red Cross resources that it is no long er possible to carry on this pro gram,'' Brooks said. It was decid ed at the last meeting of the exec utive board that until further no tice, chapter relief will be con fined to mandatory Red Cross cases. The charter of the American Red Cross from the Congress of the United States makes it man datory for the organization to care for the needs of the man in serv ice and his dependents, and also for certain veterans and his de pendents. There will be no cur tailment of these programs.
