It took the Bend nine two frames

Although they went ahead for
half an inning the game still had
to go into extra innings. The con

then in the top of the ninth the

the field with hits and runners

Size of Ring
- SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (UP)
Don Cockell, British challenger
for the world heavyweight title,
quietly resumed sparring today
while his camp protested that the
gloves were too big and the ring
too smull for Monday night s
championship fight with Rocky
Murciuno.
Manager John Simpson yester
day wired the Slate Athletic Com
mission 'that the 16 and one-half
foot ring which will be in use at
San Francisco's Kezar Stadium
would be a "tremendous handi
cap" to his boxer.
'We were promised a 20-foot
ring and we get a lG-footer,
Simpson said. "We also were
promised we would use six-ounce
gloves and we have to use eight
ounce." Jimmy Murray, who is co-promoting
the bout with the IBC,
said no promise had been made
about -Hie 20-foot ring which is lo
cales In, the Sun Francisco Civic
Auditorinio.
"I told Simpson that wc prob
ably would use the 20-foot ring hut
it Isn't available," Murray said
Locul reporters told Murray it
would be difficult to cover the
light because the 20-foot ring has
a tour foot apron which would re-
quire photographers to crawl up
to the ropes tor their pictures.

Hearn Twirls
Giants to 6-3
Over Cincinnati
By FRED DOWN
United Press Sports Writer
Leo Durocher was happy today
to admit he was all wrong because1
Jim Hearn is making things all
right for the New York Giants.
'I handled him wrong last -sea
son, the Giants manager said.
I lost confidence in him but I
promised I wouldn't do it again
this year."
Hearn, who won only eight
games tn 1954 paid another divi
dend on Durocher's new policy
Wednesday night when he pitched
the Giants to a 6-3 decision over
the Cincinnati Redlegs. In a few
short weeks he has made the full
turn from the No. 1 disappoint
ment of last season to the team's
No. 1 pitcher this year
It was the third straight victory
for the steadily-imp wing Giants
and especially heartining because
the1 Chicago Cubs snapped the run
away Brooklyn Dodgers' U-game
winning streak with a 10-8 win a
few hours before the world cham
pions took the field in Cincinnati.
The Giants still were 8 games
behind Brooklyn but they served
notice on the Dodgers that even
an occasional slip will be penal
ized.
Yields Eight lilts ,
Hearn yielded eight hits and only
two earned runs in gaining his fifth
victory of the year.
Monte Irvin hit a two-run homer
and Whltey Lockman blasted a
three-run round-tripper to spark
the Giants' nine-hit attack which
handed southpaw Joe Nuxhall his
second loss.
The Dodgers' streak long
est of the season ended when
Ernie Banks hit a grand slam
homer and Doe Fondy homered
with two on for the Cubs.
Rip Repulski's double scored
Stan Musial and climaxed, a three-
rup eith-inning rnllv that gave
the St. Louis Cardinals a 6-5 win
and stretched the Philade'phia
Phillies losing streak to 11 games
The Phillips thus neared the club
record of 14 straight setbacks suf
fered by the 1936 team. Joe Ad-
cock lrt two doubles and a single
and Ed Mathews hit a three-run
homer as the Milwaukee Braves
bent the Pittsburgh Pirates, 8-3,
in the other National League game.
Indinns Top Yankees
In the American League, the
Cleveland Indians made it two
straight over the New York Yan
kees, 4-3. and took a three-game
hold on first place. Ned Gnrver';s
three-hitter snRrked the Detroit Ti
mers to a 7-0 win over the Wash-
inrrlnn Senators; the Knnsas City
Athletics diwned the Baltimore
Orioles, 2 0, and the Boston Red
Sox beat the Chicago White Sox,
1-3.
Early Wynn bested Bob Tin-lev
in a pitching duel as the Indians
swept to their sixth straight vic
tory and 11th in 12 games. Wynn
vielriod five hits to Turley's three
hut the Yankee hurler walked eight
men and three of them scored. Al
Smith delivered a key rwp-run
s'ligle or the Indians while Andy
Carey and Mickey Mantle hom
ered for the Yankees.
Al Kalinc's seventh homer and
three hits by Jay Porter and Harry
Malmborg provided all the support
Garver needed enraute to his third
win. Bobby Shnntz, relieving Alex
Kal'.ner, yielded only two hits in
six innings to win his second for
the Athletics and Billy Klaus' two-
run homer was the difference for;
the Rod Sox. who celebrated the
announcement of Ted Williams' re
turn hy snapping a five-game los
ing skein.

said Manager Mike Higgins, who
