MILITARY CONFUSION Cpl. Jack Mills Isn't the only one who
gets confused by these twin Marine privates. James and George
(or is it George and James?) Atkins, from Muncie, Ind., are
serving at the Marine Corps Air Station, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii,
in the same company of the 4th Marine Regiment. But this is
nothing to the days before their enlistments when they were
dating twin girls.
After Ten Years, Once-Devastated
Berlin Rises Swiftly from Ruins
By JOSEPH W. GKIGG
I'liitcd Press Staff Correspondent
BERLIN (UP) Berlin, devas
tated and divided, is rising swift
ly from its ruins 10 years after
the end of World War II.
A "little iron curtain" slices it
in two. Its free Western sectors
are isolated 110 miles deep in Soviet-occupied
territory.
Two city governments, two eco
nomic systems, two worlds strug
gle for mastery in what was once
the proud capital of the German
reich.
Ten years ago the capital of Hit
ler's Nazi empire was in its death
throes under Russian attack.
The United States and Russian
armies had met on the Elbe River
on April 25.
Adolph Hitler was four days
from his death.
It was at about 3:30 p.m. on the
afternoon of April 30, 1945, that
Hitler shot himself through the
mouth in the air raid bunker of
his chancellery. His mistress Eva
Braun, whom he had married the
night before, took poison.
Bodies Burned
Aides who heard the suicide
shot and hurried into Hitler's
room found him and Eva Braun
lying on a blood-stained sofa
The bodies were taken outside,
wrapped in blankets, to a small
garden in front of an emergency
bunker exit. There gasoline was
poured on them and they were
burned.
Hitler's death never has been of
ficially certified. But only a few
weeks ago a dentist, testifying in
a law suit, said that he had iden
tified Hitler's and Eva Braun's
false teeth which the Russians
found in the garden funeral pyre.
This correspondent was one of
eight who were flown here with
German Field Marshal Wilhelm
Keitel for the final surrender.
Keltel, the German commander
in chief, had surrendered to Gen.
Dwight D. Eisenhower's Western
Allied armies at Rhcims, France,
on May 7.
The final ceremony took place
' at the headquarters here of Soviet
Marshal Georgi Zhukov, now Rus
sian defense minister.
Th Surrender
At midnight on May 8. Zhukov
summoned Gen. Carl Spaatz o!
the United States Air Force, Brit
ish Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur
Tedder and French Gen. Jean do
Lathy? de Tassigny to the surren
der room. Then Keitel and his
aides were brought in.
Tedder, in behalf of the Allies,
asked Keitel:

of unconditional surrender? are
you prepared to sign it?"
Keitel picked up a copy of the
surrender terms from a table in
front of him and said in a rasping
voice in German:
"Ja, I am ready."
Zhukov motioned him to come
forward. Immaculate in his gray
uniform with red-striped trousers,
Keitel .picked up his cap, his mar
shal's baton and gloves and
walked to another table wher.
nine copies of the surrender doc
ument were laid out.
. He screwed his monocle with
studied deliberation into his right
eye, slammed his baton loudly on
the table, sat down and signed
Eighteen months later Keitel
died on the gallows as a war
criminal.
Berlin then was still in smoking
rums. It was Stalingrad, and Cov
entry, Cologne and Warsaw all
heaped into one a hideous,
nightmarish labyrinth, seemingly
beyond all hope of repair.
Tortured City
The Berlin of 1955 is a tortured
city still tortured by the "littl;
iron curtain" that cuts across the
front of the Brandenburg Gflteand
he Potsdamer Plate and divides
the city into Communist and West
ern sectors.
But Berlin is pulsating with life
again. In the Western part, the
cafe tables are out again along
the Kurfuerstemdam sidewalk in
the spring sunshine. Big 10 and 15
story buildings are rising. The
shops display the same expensive
goods you may see on Fifth Ave
nue in New York.
At night the neon signs make
the "kudam," as Berliners call
it, a sea of light that conceals the
plaster facades of the shops and
the empty bomb lots. The little
cafes and nightclubs in the side
streets are jammed.
Life is slower in the Communist
sector. The ruins of Hitler's chan
cellery have been carted way to
make the Soviet war memArial in
the Treptow district. The shops
are less well stocked than those
in the free West, and the people
are poorly dressed. Therp are big
red Communist propaganda slo
gans everywhere.
At the city border, Western and
Communist guards glare at each
other.

Spanish Bulls
Best in World,
Minister Says
By HARMON W. NICHOLS
United Press Staff Correspondent
WASHINGTON (UP) What's
new in Washington:
A guest in our town recently
was Rafael Cavestany, the minis
ter ol agriculture for Spain. He
dropped in on Secretary of Agri
culture. .zra tsenson. mere was
press conference. A reporter
asked Cavestany if stock breeding
in Spain had anything to do wilii
improving the f i g h t i n g bulls.
"Spain," s:iid the minister, "has
the best fighting bulls in the
world. Does that answer your
question?"
Rep. Coya Knutson, the lady
Democrat from Minnesota and the
first woman member of the House
Agriculture Committee, took a trip
to the Dominican Republic recent
ly. Some wag challenged her.
"Can you milk a cow?" The pret
ty Coya not only could but did.
She stripped a Dominican Jersey
in record time. .
For the first time in its 109
years, the Smithsonian Institution
has an official flag. The banner is
royal blue, and in its center is the
torch of knowledge.
Guy Cordon likes to fell his
friends that he is the only Repub
lican senator licked in the last
election who is not an ambassa
dor. The former gentleman from
Oregon is practicing law in the
capital. At 65, he still comes down
town to look tilings over every
day.
He doesn't haunt his old haunts
though.
"Only once have I been on Cap
itol Hill," he said, "and that was
when I got hungry for the lemon
meringue pie in the Senate res
taurant." The. Civil Aeronautics Adminis
tration has an application for a -li
cense from a man who claims to
be an experienced parachutcr's
rigger.
Says tile application:
"I have packed more -than one
thousand of those things, and four
of them have worked fine."
The. letter is on file.
A statue of the late Chief Jus
tire Edward . Douglas White soon
will be in ' Statuary Hall in the
Capitol. White, who was on the
Supreme Court from 1910 to 1921,
was from Louisiana. Each state
is entitled to two statues. The oth
er Louisiana gentleman already is
standing there in bronze. The late
Huey Long.
Senate Secretary Felton M
Johnston was proud of the seal
that was put on the ceiling of his
office, honoring a tradition. It is
the seal of Mississippil And all
around on desks and tables are
things that "Skeeter," as he is
known, has collected through the
years. Pictures and replicas of
penguins. You don't have' to see
the room to get the idea that Mis
sissippi and penguins don't seem
to match.
