ROLL-ON, ROLL-OFF This plexiglass model of a new type roll-on, roll-off cargo ship shows how
military vehicles can be driven and stored on board without the use of cranes.. The first ship of
this kind, it was designed for special use by the Navy's Military Sea Transportation Service. En
gineers estimate that more than 300 jeeps, tanks and mobile mounts can be parked in the two
large holds of the five-decked, 405-foot ship. With the help of five entrances, two on each side
and one in the stern, loading and unloading time can be greatly reduced. A traffic control system
with lights also speeds up the operation. George E. Sharp, Inc., New' York marine architects,
designed the vessel. Only one prototype is now planned and it should be completed by late 1956.

A Southern Illinois University so
ciologist has found that some men
tally ill persons "carry on mana
gerial and professional jobs with
apparent success."
Dr. Herman Lantz reported on
the first mental study ever made
of a large group of non-hospital-ized
men. His subjects were 1,000
World War II Air Force officers
and enlisted men from various cul
ture regions and walks of life.
"Some mentally ill persons make
the grade in high-Status positions!omJ or uiurt to receive the paper reg
because somehow they are able to
inlegrate their deviant personali
ties with their occupations," Lantz
said in a report in the journal, So
cial Problems.
The sociologist found 36.1 per
cent of Hie 119 men who held high
status position in civilian life were
severely psychoneurotic; 21 per
cent were actually psychotics
the most advanced form of men
tal illness.
Lantz said his findings "call for
an analysis of such people to learn
how they are able to integrate
their psychoneuroses with their
jobs."
His study shows persons engaged
in agricultural vocations are least
psychotic of any occupation. Lantz
believes this is due more to rural
family and group life than to oc
cupation. He found few students
and clerical workers were mental
ly ill.
The highest percentage of psy
chotics found in the study were in
low - prestige occupations un
skilled and odd jobs.
