UP A Gtn-ral Electric Company au diior has found a way to stop me chanical "goldbricking." Suspicious that automatic office machines might, like some hu mans, bo looking busy when they' were not, John Vavasour decided to find out. lie borrowed a labora tory recording instrument and hooked It to power lines feeding various tabulating machines. Telltale graphs promptly showed that machines which seemed to le busy all the time were really idle for long periods, he discovered. Also, thi' "goldbricking" was most apparent when several different kinds of machines were perform ing different work. Some finished the job quickly, then rested while the others caught up. Until his experiment, the best possible human observation was that the machines were working 100 per cent, and more were need ed. Now, operators no longer have to watch the mechanical culprits, and scientific re - scheduling work has boosted output without new machines, the company said. So he telephoned his wife at home to learn whether he had received any calls and to find out if there was anything doing. He found out fast. "Our house is on fire," shouted his wife. Ray quickly headed for home, but by the time he got there fire men had the flames well under control. Damage was $600, and that was Ray's story for the day.
