7 PH. 56 A WANT AD A DAY MAKES ALL BUSINESS PAY! PH. 56 The Bend Bulletin. Wednesday, March 30, 1955 3a Sen. Barkley's Keep Up With I'niteil I'ri'ks Stuff Correspondent By HARMON W. MCUOLS WASHINGTON (UP) Whafs now in Washington: Sen. Alben W. Barkley of Ken tucky bounces around so much that his own staff can't keep track of him. According to Mrs. Flo Bratten, the former Veep's long time assistant: "We have to read the Congressional Record every day to see where he's been." Sen. Lyndon Baines Johnson ol Texas went back to Mayo's at Rochester, Minn., recently for a check-up. The sawbones there suggested that Johnson return to Washington and take some heat treatments twice a day. The gen glcman from Texas told his phy sician: "Doc, where I'm going back to Washington it will be easy to carry out your orders." Maybe the Washington cops are Democrats May Try to Pin War Label on GOP By RAYMOND LAHR I'liited Press Stuff Correspondent WASHINGTON (UP) Senate Democrats today gingerly tested the idea of hanging a "war party" label on their Republican col leagues. The war party talk among Democrats grew out of weekend statements of Senate Republican Leader William F. Knowland and Chairman Styles Bridges of the Senate GOP Policy Committee. Both made clear their belief that the United States should join in the defense of Quemoy and the Matsu Islands, held by the Chinese Nationalists, if the Chinese Com munists attack those offshore out posts. Pressure on President? Senate Democratic Leader Lyn don B. Johnson, without naming the GOP leaders, needled them for allegedly trying to pressure Presi dent Eisenhower. Johnson said the country wants neither a "war party" nor an "appeasement par ty." "I think perhaps we've already got that war party," Sen. John J. Spai'kman (D-Ala), a Foreign Relations Committee member, told a reporter today. "The trail of events points pretty strongly to it." He said Mr. Eisenhower had sug gested the use of atomic tactical weapons in the Far East if hostili ties developed and that Secretary of State John Foster Dulles had cautioned the people to start think ing about war. He then cited Knowland's and Bridges' weekend statements and Monday's demand by Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy (R-Wis) that Mr. Eisenhower announce whether Quemoy and the Matsus would be defended. A Drift to War "There's the whole front not just a group in the Republican Party," Sparkman said. 'The drift to war is there and nobody can stop it except the President and his administration. It will be inter esting to see who leads the par ade." Another Foreign Relations Com mittee member. Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey (D-Minnl, said he thinks Bridges' and Knowland's statements came "strangely close to meeting tltat description of Sen. Johnson's.'' "I think Sen. Johnson expressed it very well, if the shoe fits put it on." Humphrey said. "I think the administration has got to tell the American people clearly and forcefully where we stand' in the Far East, what we are going to do, and then seek a coalition of support ill Congress without appeasing the forces that openly challenge the established foreign olicy." Anyhow, the Criminal Division of Municipal Court took in more money in fines last week than any previous week in his tory. Total of $46,783, almost $20.- 000 of it from parking fines. Animals are a little like people. They react to the runaway from God's time, like from daylight to standard and the other way around. Dr. William Mann, head of the Washington Zoo, says that monkeys are very happy when the clock is moved ahead because they get their lettuce and grapes earlier. But they squawk like mad when the clock is turned bac on them. The great William Mi Mann, by the way, has been on the shelf recently, a little ailing. In 13 years he never has missed a Shrine Circus. He's about to. But he got a flavor of the circus, any how he being the country's No. 1 circus fan. The Shriners brought a three-montlvold lioness to his place across from the zoo to growl a howdy to the wonder ful old guy. The "D6c" felt better. Don't say that Washington cops aren't filled with the milk of hu man kindness. The other day, Pvt. Roy Taylor, the whistle-blowin-est officer in the world blew one at a street car, which had a green light on 14th St. He stopped the car, blocked traffic and escorted a small boy aboard. that kid, said the otlicer, "was about to be late for school.'.' Polly Patricia Harrington, daughter of Chief Fire Control! man and Mrs. Joseph Harring ton, has been named associate editor of Our Navy magazine. Polly Pat will be in "charge of children s affairs for the maga zine. The young lady is the world's youngest journalist. She is three weeks old. Her sister, Sheila, aged two, is unemployed. Morse Tosses Hells Challenge At Patterson THE DALLES (UP) Sen. Wayne Morse, Oregon Democrat Monday challenged Gov. Paul L. Patterson and Oregon Republicans to take a stand on his controversial Hells Canyon bill. Morse's bill calls for construc tion of a high federal multipurpose dam across the Snake river on the Oregon-Idaho border, rather than the three low dams proposed by the Idaho Power company. Before a crowd of 500 in The Dalles high school auditorium Morse called on Gov. Patterson to decide "whether you are for it or against it. Morse said the Republicans would be responsible if his Hells Canyon bill failed to pass. Twenty eight Democrats and two Repub licans signed the bill and other Democrats including Sen. Alben Barkley have indicated their sup port. Far East Pnliry Hit Morse charged Sen. Henry Dworshak of Iduho with represent ing Idaho Power company more than the people of Idaho. Sen Dworshak has declared his opposi tion to a high federal dam on the Snake. Turning to international affairs, Morse told Wasco county Demo crats th.it the United States' bluff of defending Quemoy and the Mat su islands off the Red China coast was going to be called. "We would be outside of inter national law in defending the two islands," Morse said. "I would rather be retired for six years than lake a position oulside inter-j nutional law, he added. He predicted the Chinese would rail the U.S. bluff within "120 days." Morse touched on other matters in his address and revealed he was preparing an amendment to the anti-trust laws raising the penally on conviction from $-"000 to $."0,000.
