Baruch Testifies AtMarketProbe i?ea"d'SuPPy
WASHINGTON (UP) Bernard
M. Baruch, the elder statesman
who made his own fortune by
guessing the market right, told
annate investigators Wednesday
that neither he nor anyone else
"knows whether stocks are too
high today."
Baruch told the Senate Banking
and Currency Committee that the
market is not the cause of the
booms and busts in the economy.
MacArthur Hits
Yalta Decision
NEW YORK (UP)-Gen. Doug
las MacArthur said today that
"the imminent collapse of Japan"
in World War II "was clearly
apparent several months'' before
to bring Russia into the Pacific
war.
The former commander of Al
lied forces in the Far East issued
a formal statement of his views
as a result of the publication last
week of the Yalta papers.
"Had my views been requested
m reference to Yalta, I would i
most emphatically have recom-1
mended against bringing the Sov
iet into the Pacific war at that
late date," MacArthur said.
MacArthur said that all his re
ports after October, 1944, had pre
saged the imminent collapse of
Japan and that discussion had
even been held in his headquarters
about the possibility that the war
against Japan would end before
the war in Europe.
There have been published re
ports that MacArthur had told
Washington the invasion of Japan
and the final defeat of the Nip
ponese would cost perhaps one
million lives. These reports were
cited by backers of President
Roosevelt as sufficient and good,
reason to make concessions to the
Russians at Yalta.
Hongkong Sets
New Airport
HONGKONG (UP) Hongkong
authorities have decided to give
the British Crown Colony a brand
new airport featuring a reinforced
runway that juts out into the sea,
According to an official an
nouncement, the construction of the
new airport, which in reality is an
expansion of the Colony's present
Kai Tak airport, will represent the
largest single civil engineering con
tract ever to be undertaken in the
colony's history of more than 100
years.
While announcing the large-scale
undertaking the government ad
vertised in the Colony's newspa
pers for contractors to handle the
huge project. The advertisement
stated that the project is merely
the first stage of the development
of the present Kai Tak airport.
The main task in stage one will
ho to, reclaim a strip of land ad
jacent to the present airport on
which the new runway will be built.

Steel Industry
NEW YORK (UP) The soaring
steel industry faces a demand-sup
ply crisis. Iron Age said today and
issued this warning:
"The worst
is yet to come.
Back of the booming market for
stccl lies a general industrial up-
swing, noted the national metal-
working weekly.
Producers are doing all they can
to cope with the crisis," it said.
"And consumers are fighting hard
to protect their own interests.
"But signs are multiplying that
the surging economy is gaming
more strength. The pickup is
reaching into new industries and
generating additional s'.eel demand
which iiiteniiits ,he competition
for avai'.iU" finished products.
Iron Age said the demand pat
tern works like a chain reaction
with automotive buying serving as
'the trigger."
"Continued high consumer de
mand for cars," it noted, "indi
cates a strong automotive push for
steel through the first halt of 1953,
burring an auto strike in June.
'Automotive buying in turn
exerts' a strong impact on other
consumers, including the car indus
try's suppliers.
'Aggravating the picture is a
resurgence in buying for farm ap
pliances, construction, oil and gas,
and pipe line projects. Even the
railroads are becoming more of a
factor."
Iron Age points out that the full
potential in some industries still
looms ahead. It mentions the pos
sibility of a shortage in merchant
wire, reflecting heavy farm de
mand.
Meanwhile," it adds, "the out
look for third-quarter business
grows stronger. More consumers
ire trying to place third-quarter
business.
"Producers now are resigned to
fairly substantial carryovers from
the second quarter on some prod
ucts." The publication points to these
other signs of a tightening market:
1. More consumers are paying
full warehouse prices for 'small ton
nages. '
2. Mills are running short of ship
ping space.
3. Steel brokers are receiving
more inquiries for premium-priced
goods.
4. "Secondary" material virtual
ly has gone from the market, be
cause of upgrading.
. 5. Growing interests in steel con
version. Iron Age commented that "some
sources may be trying to lay the
groundwork for domestic conver
sion arrangements."
