Portland Notes
Food Price Drop
SAN FRANCISCO (UP) Food
prices in Portland, Ore., continued
to drop between January and Feb
ruary and reached their lowest
level since December 1950.
The department's Western Re
gional Bureau of Labor Statistics
said today food prices in Portland
last month averaged 3.8 per cent
lower than those of February,
1954, and three-tenths per cent
lower than Junuary, 1955.
Cereals and bakery products
were five-tenths per cent cheaper
in Portland in February, poultry
and fish also were down 1.8 per
cent. The level of dairy product
prices remained unchanged, but
fruits and vegetables were down
1.1 per cent. Lower prices for
lettuce and oranges were not suf
ficient to offset increases for
apples, potatoes and tomatoes, the
bureau said.
