8a The Bend Bulletin, Thursday. March 24, 1955 Italy's New Hotel Project Designed to Boost Tourism ROME (UP) Italy's ox , perimental chain of 37 new Jolly Hotels in out-of-the way places proved a big success in 19j3, and officials say the total will be brought up to 43 by the end of this year. A project of Count Caetano M'ir zotto, the "enlightened" Vicena textile magnate, the hotels an1 one-third financed by the govern , ment in its attempt at economic reform for the backward areas of the peninsula. The hotels are mostly located in beautiful but undeveloped places. They vary in size, but offer first class facilities in towns where as a rule no tourist facilities ever existed. I Spokesman for the Jolly Hotels -in -Rome is a prominent Catholic .layman, Giovanni Vaccnrl, a Knight of Malta. He is vice-presl-dent of the hotel corporation as .well as a member of Mnrzotlo's -textile organization. r "Although our hotels are de- signed to meet the budgets of average tourists," Vaccari said, '"we have alreudy attracted a a number of celebrities. At our 58 - room hotel in Trani, on ' the south Adriatic, wo hosted U. 8. Others use tiny purple and pink glass beads, flecked with sil J ver or gold. , Beads are puckered, popcorn ; like, hollow, lacy or cylindrical. There are mock seed pearls, .very delicate, and pale glazed beads, irregularly sized. Naturally, with so much bead news, there is a new necklace design for spring: the 30 inch "lei" or opera length neck lace muy be worn as u single strand or looped double as a choker. , The "lei" is usually thicker than a beaded strund and is fashioned with clusters of beads or liny lowers. Most are matched with parrlngs and bracelets. I and a party of 10 people. The I same hotel also accommodated the King and Queen of Greece." Booxt To Tourist Vaccari explained that in south ern Italy, the crisis area where the government is busily working on reform und economic improve ment, the Cassa del Mezzogiomo (government agency for the reg ion) provides financial backing for the venture. In other parts of Italy, the national tourist agency pro vides needed backing. "Imagine what this means In the sense of tourism," Vaccari said. "Up till now, almost all Ital ian tourist trade was limited to the major cities like Naples, Rome, Florence and Venice. You could read all about the beuutiful Greek temple at Agrigenlo, but there wasn't a decent place to stay nearby, and no places ulong the highway between Naples and your destination. Now, tourists can travel down Italy to the farth est point of Sicily und find good places to slay all along the way. The first Jolly hotels opened last May, all designed by the same architect along functional lines, but vurying In size from 22 rooms to a projected 152-room hotel now Sicily. Kach Jolly Hotel has an "Amer ican bar" and a tiled swimming pool, colorful modem dining room und lounges, convenient bedrooms and ample garage facilities. New Construction Called "Auto-Stelli" (auto stars) by the Touring Club d'ltalia, the new hotels ure placed away from the main highwuys. Shoes Feature Lower Cut Lines The smartly dressed male will go stepping out this spring and summer in new shoes featuring lower cut lines. Here Is the dom inant trend in styling of mascu line footwear for the coming sea sons, taking its cue from the slim mer, trimmer silhouette that will prevail in men's clothing. Happily, the new styling, aided and abetted by newer and light weight leathers for soles as well as uppers, and by built-in air con ditioning, is bringing the male the; most comfortable shoes he has' ever worn." i The new "lower line" is being featured on shoes for town wear and casual wear alike,, and in a greater variety of colorful mate rials than ever before. Lighter weight calfskins and cordovans, soft suedes and fabric meshes in combination with leather are among popular materials. Color trends In men's shoes for the coming season are In step with mounting popularity of the darker hued clothing, with such In teresting combinations as charcoal and light grey and contrasting browns to be seen In the stores. Other colors from which men will choose this season are dark er blues, black brown and black green, especially for wearing with charcoal hued suits and slacks. The Italian influence has reached the American male's feet this year, according to the Leather Industries of America. Many of new casuals have the modified ta pered toe, the broader looking forepart and shorter backpart. These are mainly in slip-ons, which are as comfortable as they look, being crafted of very soft, supple leathers. Crush-reststunt plaid lin ens appear in suits and coats as well as dresses. Silk-and-worsted and silk-and-viscose mixtures join spun rayon in the linen-effect group. Linen newly blended with wool makes an exciting coat and cos tume fabric that resembles Italian mw silk in light weight and rough surface. Straw-mat and silk are popular wool blends, while tweed takes the lead in extremely light weight all wool. Random tweeds, from crisp and nubby to soft and fine, are seen most; but there is a generous supply of herringbones and other patterns with quite smooth surfaces. Slubby weaves look most Im portant in basic wools, such as tissue-weight flannels, but a ten dency to sheen types appears in the large crop of serge, twill and gabardine. Pleated novelty cottons, border design prints and unusual all-over prints share the spring spotlight with crinkle cottons. Solid color crinkle cotton blouses that don't nebd Ironing are paired with new looking printed skirts on such grounds as pique, cotton satin, twill and linen-weave cottons. j Sport cottons favor denim, sail-; cloth, corduroy, twill nnd terry, cloth, while dress cottons are thick malelasses, damasks and bro cades. Cotton satin will be every where. Cotton coats and suits j make a big story, using the heav-j ier weights and glossy surfaces. Tweed and jucquard weave cot-j tons make fine suitings. Rich silks are significant in. snrinn's dress-up sytles. The new est are crisp textures with a bulky hand. Silks in gently draped fash ions are soft. Subteen Fashions Style Conscious From plaid raincoats to print cottons, subteen fashions show an: increasing preoccupation with style. This is especially evident In the Dior-inspired long torso wnicn; seen in so many ot the new'j spring fashions. I The full skirted, long torso -ed subteen dresses have inspired n1 new look in subteen lingerie, with slips nnd petticoats molding the hipline. In suits, the long torso vies with box jackets for the most important, pluce. Both styles are seen display-i ing a nautical influence. Too, full circle skirts are gaining subteen ; suit popularity.
