Firemen Shouldn't Try To Answer Each Other's Calls LOS ANGELES (UP) Ap peal to Los Angeles. Calif., and Seattle, Wash, city Bremen: Please fellows, don't try to an swer each other's alarms. This message, In more official language, was given to firemen after alarms put out via short wave radio In each city were heard in the other city "loud and clear just as if they were com ing from the home central office." Fire department radios In both cities operate on the same fre quency and calls were heard in the wrong cities due to freak at mospheric conditions. "We ran a test with Seattle, just to see how clearly we were receiving each other's calls," said Capt. John W. Burnham of the Los Angeles fire department. "We were receiving them very clearly. The test was ordered after an indignant battalion commander here called the central control of fice and demanded: , "Why wasn't my outfit sent out on that candy factory fire on Com monwealth Avenue? That's in my aisinct." "It isn't; it's in Seattle," he was told. "The danger,' one fire depart ment spokesman said, "is that both the Los Angeles end Seattle fire departments might get on a hot one at the same time and then receive a fire call for a street that both cities have." But he explained that while that possibility exists, the danger is small sjnee a. special set of cir cumstances must occur before a Los Angeles or Seattle fire en gine would tear off to fight a blaze In the other city. Reflecting layers of atmosphere would have to occur at the right altitude to bounce the radio waves into the cities. This occurs two or three times a year and might last several days. Fire companies would have to be out on a call, which in Los Angeles is the only time they receive fire calls via radio they receive them only by telephone or box signal while in the station. The fire location would have to be on the streets of the same name in both cities, and the false loca- j tion in the same district as .that of a fire company out of the sta tion fighting a blaze or doing fire prevention work at the time. Los Angeles companies do fire preven tion work two days a week. But just in case the aforemen- Young Scientists In Short Supply AUSTIN, Tex. (UP) There will be an acute shortage of scien tifically trained young men with in a few years unless more high school graduates can be induced to seek scientific training in col lege, a National , Research Coun cil committee chairman says. The chairman, Dr. H. J. Ettlin- ger of the department of mathe matics of the University of Texas and head of the NRCs division of mathematics, has been touring Texas high schools seeking pros pective students. Ettlinger launched his "grass roots" campaign after deciding the shortage of such students would be harmful in many ways. Not only will there not be enough scientifically trained men for . in dustry and military needs, he said, but there will not be enough of them to provide teachers for following groups of students. Ettlinger recently attended n international mathematics confer ence in the Netherlands and said he learned that shortage was not peculiar to the United States. Saudi Arabia Agreen This offensive has been spear headed by Major Salah Salem, the Egyptian minister of national guidance, who has written two lengthy articles in the official or gan, Al Gomhouria. Major Salem has not minced his language, and Syrian Prime Minister Fares El Khoury has been singled out for bitter criticism because of what Salem described as a "fluid attitude. The question now is what Is go ing to happen next. On Feb. 6, the day the conference broke up. Egyptian Prime Minister Gamal Abdel Nasser, said that Egypt would pull out of the Arab League's security pact on the day that Iraq signed its pact with Turkey. Saudi Arabia's premier. Crown Prince Feisal, said his country would follow Egypt's example. "We are in full agreement with Egypt regarding foreign policy," he added. There have also been thinly veiled hints that Egypt may leave the Arab League altogether unless Iraq abandons her projected ties with her northern neighbor, buti official sources deny this. Powerless Position It appears most unlikely that Iraq will alter her policy as thei Iraqui parliament, recently gave Premier Nuri El Said a unanimous vote of confidence. The result is a stalemate, but Egypt's objective is to make the other Arab states change their policy. Th Bend Bulletin, Thurtdoy, March 24, 1955 7a". T.: di. Matter have come to a head after the protracted Cairo meet ing of Arab premiers whose views differed regarding Iraq s decision to make a defensive pact with Turkey. This meeting lasted for a fort night but no agreement could be reached and no communique was issued. i What it comes to is that the eight states represented at the meeting held widely divergent views about the Iraqui - Turkish pact. Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and to a certain extent the Yemen, roundly abused the pact. . Syria. the Lebanon, Jordan and Libya of ficially adopted a non - commit tal attitude, but semi - officially let it be known that they were not opposed to the pact. At the time of writing it would appear that the resignation was chiefly due to internal reasons and had nothing to do ivith Syria's lati tude to the Iraq-Turkish pact. Under all these circumstances, political personalities may under take missions to the various Mid dle East capitals with the object of personally ramming home their point of view. To sum up it has become clear that the Arab League is in a pow erless position, and it will be a miracle if it survives. But miracles do occur In the Middle East.
