SKIS HELP HIM LOG GOOD DAY'S WORK This logger is skiing on the job. but he's not
doing it for sport. He's Kenneth Lambert, assistant chief scaler at the Brown Co. Berlin, N. H.
Recently Brown's wanted to know how much wool was stored in a section of the Androscoggin Riv
er, above Berlin. Lambert hit upon an idea. He borrowed a pair of skis, hooked one end of a light
rope to his belt and started "skiing" across the loj-packed river. Arriving at the other side, the rope
was pulled back and measured to determine the exact width of the stream at a given point. The
length of other sections also was measured. Then it was simple arithmetic to figure the quantity of
wood. Now the Brown Co., is planning to design special skis for '.'log-hopping."

Good, Bad News
By ( IIAKI.KS M. McCANN

The week's good and bad news
on the international balance
sheet:
The (iood
1. Secretary of State John Fos
ter Dulles gave the Chinese Com
munists a grim warning ol what
they may expect if they attack
Formosa and possibly if they
attack the Nationalist outpost is
lands of Quemoy and Mutsu. If
the Reds engage in "open armed
aggression," Dulles said in a
broadcast speech, it probably will
mean that they have decided on
general war in Asia. "The United
Stales," Dulles warned, ". . .has
sea and air forces now etfulpped
with new and powerful weapons
of precision, which can utterly de
stroy military targets without en
dangering unrelated civilian
centers."
2. The Communists suffered a
smashing defeat ill legislative
elections in the state of Andhra
in India. The Reds had succeeded
in .unseating the Andhra govern
ment, controlled by Prime Minis
ter .lawaliarlal Nehru's Congress
Party, on a confidence vote. The
Reds had held IS seats in the
state leglature, the Congress
Parly 16. The Reds hoped to win
Hie election and take over Andhra
themselves. Instead they lost near
ly all the seats they had. In par
tial returns for the 19B-seat legis
lature, the Congress Party had
117. the Reds 10.
3. The Kremlin is talking tough
in its propaganda, but it is evi
dent that the internal situation
throughout the Soviet bloc is bad.
Following the fall of Soviet Prei
mier Georgi M. Malenkov, Hun
garian Premier Imre Nagy was
accused by the Hungarian Com
munist Parly of "duping the work
ing classes." He probably will be
ousted. Like Malenkov, Nagy was
blamed for putting production of
consumer goods ahead of heavy
industry.
The B:ul
. 1. Well informed American
sourres in Tokyo were reported,
fearful that a general war in Asia
may bo only week away. Dis
patches from Washington, London
and Taipei, Formosa, said that
Chinese Reds have moved long
range artillery and a full air di
vision of new Russian-built MIO-17
jet fighters to positions near the
Nationalist-held offshore island of
Quemoy and Matsu. They said
that despite Dulles' warnings, Red
Premier Chmi Fn-Lai seems de
termined to attack Formosa.
2. A new dispute over the tiny
Saar coal region threatens to de
lay final rat ifie.il inn by both West
Germany and France of the trea
ties which provide for German
armament. West Germany wants
the way left open for the full re
turn of the Saar when a German
peace treaty is signed. France
wants to retain its economic
rights in the Saar.
.1. Some powerful leaders of
three political-religious sects are
trying to overthrow the American
supnnrtrd government of Premier
Ngo Pinh Diem in Southern Viet
Nam in Indochina. Dispatches
fi nil Saigon, the capital, report
h avv fu-liling between Viet Nam
national troops and rebels of the
sects, which fear that Ngo's po
litical reforms may deprive them
of some of thc;r ancient priv
ileges.

Wholesale Price
Of 'Coffee Cut
SAN FRANCISCO (UP) ' Two
major Bay Area coffee wholesal
ers, Hills Brothers and MJB, cut
the wholesale price of coffee 5
cents a pound Friday.
It was expected that retailers
would pass the cuts along to their
customers in the immediate future.
The Folger Coffee Company an
nounced a similar cut effective
today or Monday.
A spokesman or S & W Fine
Foods said his company already
had been 5 cents a wholesale
pound under the list of other ma
jor companies, but that S & W
has not decided whether to make
a further cut.
The wholesale cuts here were
caused by a wholesale price cut
by Maxwell House in the East.
Coffee has been selling for about
$1.04 a pound here at retail. -
BULLET RADIO A radio
transmitter small enough to fit
in the noso of a 20-mm. shell
has been developed by the U. S.
Naval Ordnance Laboratory in
Washington. The transmitter,
shown in the plastic nose at
top, will help ballistics experts
study the flight of the projec
tile. It is powered by the coin
like mercury battery in center.

No Change Due
On BPA Power
PORTLAND (UP) Bonneville
Power Administration officials
said Friday that continuation of
this winter's low precipitation
trends would not affect firm pow
er commitments. .
BPA officials here said current
low stream flows and the esti
mated 80 per cent of normal Co
lumbia Basin snow cover "do not
add up to a prospective brown out
or serious power shortage."
The BPA said an early runoff
of .the Columbia basin snow melt
and a dry summer and fall could
result in "curtailment" of inter-
ruptible industrial loads until the
start of the fall rainy season.
The curtailment could be met
with higher cost generation, if in
dustries concerned so decided.
Units newly installed at McNary,
Chief Joseph and Chandler dams,'
providing an increased capability
of more than 600.000 kilowatts on
the Columbia, would in largo part
offset minimum stream flows in
late August and September, if they
should occur.
Even though stream flows are
below normal, the BPA said, the
Columbia River spring runoff
would be sufficient to fill the prin
cipal federal storage reservoirs,
and to fill all BPA power loads
through late August.
Welfare Letter
Brings Beating
LEBANON, Ore. (UP) Mrs. E
A. Gall said Friday she would con
tinue her battle against what she
termed illegal use ot public wel
fare funds by some families in
Linn county although her life was
threatened and her husband se
verely beaten.
Mrs. Gall had written a letter
printed in the Lebanon Express
last month in which she claimed
knowledge of five cases where
welfare funds were being received
illegally.
She said she Rot .a telephone
call Wednesday afternoon from a
woman who told her "this is the
day and the hour. Prepare to meet
your maker." Wednesday night an
unknown male assailant beat her
husband, who was hospitalized,
Mrs. Gall and her teen-age daugh
ter were not at home when the
assailant forced his way in.
Police Chief Ned Crippen called
it "a sincere attempt" on the lile
of Mrs. Gall.
Mrs. Oatl said, 1 m not going
to let them scare me out. It's
the little guys like me who should
get to the root of governmental
problems and not just sit around
crying alwut taxes."
