of tiny islands 150 miles north o.

ing television to inspect the bot
torn of the spillway of Gram
Coulee dam, the world's largcs
hydroelectric plant.
The TV device used includes a
television camera which is takci
to the base, or "bucket," of the
dam by a deep sea diver. The
diver focuses the camera on tilt
structure and the picture is con
veyed by cable to engineers ato
the dam.
Engineers say previous inspoc
tions of the bottom of the spill
way had been made by divers, bu
this was not satisfactory because
the divers were not trained tc
make the necessary observations
The TV picture gives the engl
neers an accurate idea of wha'
repairs are needed to. the under
water portion of the dam whlcl
is eroded by water rushing ovei
the spillway.
