L Nielsen Phone 644 Redmond Drops Close Contest To Burns Quint Special to The Bulletin REDMOND A near -win for Redmond was still a sure-win for Burns as the Hilanders saved their game Saturday night on their home floor with a final sec onds tip-in, to record a 58 to 56 win. Burns' big center, Bob Smith, made their final 'basket after Earle Smith, Redmond's center, had brought the score to an even 56 In the Panthers' hard-driving fourth quarter. Dan Allen, five foot eight Burns guard, was high for the evening with 19 points. The Panthers, while playing good ball, looked a little more rugged than they had Friday night. Their shooting percentage was less, around 30 percent. The smaller courts both nights some what cramped their .style and the pressure of both games was obvi ous as they contested for points all the way. Burns led during most of the game Saturday night, Redmond trailing 17-15 at 'the end of first quarter and 32-29 at half time. By third quarter tho Hilanders had stretched their advantage to 11 points. 49 to 38. and at one time in the last period their lead was 13 points. The last-ditch PanthersJSt. Francis Pa. 85 Temple then turned on the heat and closed the gap to three points at 56-53. Smith gained one on a free throw and with 42 seconds left rebounded Dave McCrea's shot and tied It up. A long pass to Burns turned the trick, and in the final 14 sec onds Redmond tried for overtime but the horn cancelled that chance. Panther forward Earl ' Schult was high for Redmond with 14. Merle Eakin had 12, McCrea and Smith each 11. Each team lost a man on fouls in the fourth, quar ter. Redmond now stands with sev en wins and two losses, and their rival for top spot, Lakeview, now has two losses also, following their defeat by Bend . Saturday night. The Honkers have six wins, and two games yet to play. Redmond's only remaining league game is at Bend, Friday, February 25.
