Ohio State University students couldn't believe their eyes when they found the Oval decorated with a boat, sails aloft. Then they discovered it was a stunt to get new members for the OSU Sailing Club. Doris Moser, Columbus, is handling the main sheet - Experts Forecast DENVER (UP) Two Colorado weather experts agreed this week ica and Europe would get colder during' the next two or three dc that virtually all ol North Amer temperatures and more moisture cades. The long-range forecast was made by Dr. Waller Orr Roberts, Colorado University, and backed lationship between drought cycles by Dr. Irving P. Krick, widely known "rain-muker" and weather forecaster. Dr. Roberts, who bases his "ed ucated guess" on sunspot activity, said he believes the damaging C0 ycar warm, dry cycle on both con tinents Was just about over and that a "very definite increase in precipitation this year substantial ly in February and March" could be expected. The director pointed out that when there is a marked decline in Progress Noted On Plane Strips SALEM (UP) Progress toward development of light plane strips at four sites in Oregon was re ported Thursday at a meeting of the State Board of Aeronautics here by Earl W. Snyder, board director. . . Snyder also said progress was being made in an effort to lift the ban on air strips in national parks. ; . Sites of tlic proposed light plane strips arc at Seaside - Gearhart, McNary, John Day and Lake of the Woods. Snyder said three possible sites in the Scasidc-Gcarhart area were being investigated by an aviation committee from the two resort communities. At McNary, Army engineers are helping with the site area narrowed to Ihut adjacent to the town., Hat Rock state park was rejected as being too expensive for development. At Lake of the Woods a strip already built is not usuable dur ing the summer because of. high water and Snyder will meet later this month with interested groups to see if the field' can be made usuable. The ' board authorized Snyder to help the Chamber of Commerce at John Day select a site for a strip in that area. Snyder said the national park service was willing to build strips in the parks, under certain con ditions, but that nosmoney was available. However, he said when sunspots redevelop, the very opposite occurs. Dr. Roberts said the ran has been kept under constant observa tion from the high altitude obser vatory and that increased activity on the sun has been spotted re cently. ' He also said recent discoveries indicate that sunspots also control the jet stream by radiation. Dr. Krick said he and his spec ialists "feel there is a definite re lationshipbetwecn drought cycles and sun disturbances ... and that there is much support for the theory that our air currents are derived from the sun." Krick also said "any change in the sun's temperature can be tre mendously important, although it's hard to pinpoint just, where the changes will occur on earth. "We do expect the next couple of years at least to bring more moisture in ' the rocky mountain region," he said. Advance Made In Concrete Pipe . WATERLOO, la. (IB A strange looking device invented here 46 years ago was the first to make possible the machine" production of cement pipe - from four inches to three feet in diameter. Now, the firm which makes this apparatus has come up with a process to make cement pipe connections leak-proof, particular ly important when a sewer line goes near water supplies of the ol' swimmin' hole and provides danger of pollution. Also, the new type of pipe, which can be made up to six to eight inches in diameter, reduces the amount of pumping at the treatment plant which usually is required to remove water that has seeped into such pipe. J. N. Schenck and J. W. Stew art, the partner founders of the Zeidler Concrete Machinery Prod ucts Co. here, first exhibited their new idea in the old industry of concrete pipe-making back in 1908. The huge machine principally is a big arm that whirls around and packs cement inside a cylin drical mold.
