Gotta Be Quick To Keep Up With Switches in Panama By HAU.MAX W. Ml HOI.S jliand. sent i- ; y us international I'nited Press Slalf Correspondent press service :hroad about Ihe go WASHINGTON lUPI Wh.n s i in& 011 behind tile Iron Curtain. new in Washington: The Department of State issued a release the other day culling Ri cardo Arias Espinosa the foreign minister of Panama. A liflle later, there was a fast correction. The clock had run so fast that by the time the boys in the press coop had the . informa tion, the release was fixed up to read: "President" Ricardo Arias Espinosa. Things move pretty quick in Panama. Rep. Jim Wright, the Texas Democrat, wrote in his newsletter to the folks back home that the "pink mink" is now advertised by Washington department, stores. Wright continued: "Politicians be ware! If anything could he more suspect than a mink, surely it would be a pink mink." And speaking of small animals. The chinchilla people are holding a convention here. Seems that the furs from the rare little animals go into very few coals or neck wraps. Perle Mesta, billed gener ally as Washington's best known hostess, owns a. full-length coat. Nobody seems to know what she paid for it, but if she paid less than $12,000 or $15,000 it is a cheap one. And Perle doesn't buy cheap coats. A senator, who would jtisl as soon not be identified, received a letter from an inmate of a federal prison. "Please send me," the convict ordered,, "the House re port on bank robberies, including burglary." The U.S. Information Agency has some pretty funny jokes at Thomas Reports Naval Readiness WASHINGTON Navy Sec retary Charles S. Thomas assured Congress Friday Ihe Navy can co pewilh "any local naval actions" iate immediately if general war in the Formosan Straits and relal breaks out. Thomas appeared before Ihe House Armed Services Committee with Artm. Robert B. Carney, chief ol naval operations, and Gen. Lem uel C, Shepherd Jr., Marine Corps commandant. "To be specific in regard to the current and urgent issue," Thomas told the committee, "the Navy at present strength can, in my opin ion, adequately cope with any lo cal naval actions with respect to Ihe limited area of the Formosan Straits. "If a major conflict should occur now or in the future," he said, "this naval program is slill de signed to withstand the initial on slaught, to contribute immediately to Mm nnlinn's ret;ili:tlnrv nriwriv and lo provide a base for full and rapid mo' i!!zali(in.' SliiplKMU rc)iiilcd that Hie Ma rino Corps "is in eNccllent condi tion." "Our throe divisions and three air winns are prepared to so into combat today, if need lie." Shep herd said. The Marine Corps faces a cut of .H.000 men to a total of i:.fMI0 between Juno 10.VI and June 1056. The Navy faces a cut of G2.000 inen. to a total of 657.000 in the same period under the administra- LT feuV" tioil's lliani0Ver reduction. jSlnte of On-on. for the County afore- The committee has scheduled a Iff 3',". It concerns a local Com munist Party secretary. This fel low, obeying orders, called on the manager of an East German ma chine tractor station. "You will see to it, comrade, hat all of your Soviet tractors are placed at the service of the refugee farmers returning Trom West Germany," tthe secre tary directed. "But comrade secretary," the manager howled, "We have only three Soviet tractors, and they are out of order." The comrade secretary twisted Ihe end of his mustache and shouted that that didn't make any difference. "The farmers aren't eturning." A joke current in Budapest has 'o do with the Hungarian Secret Police who arrested two 'charac ters, but released one of them. Before the lucky one left the jail 'louse he asked his unhappy "riend: "What did you confess to?" The man who had been detained said he had confessed to buying sugar on the black market. And why did the man confess? "Had to," the prisoner said. "The man who locked me up sold Ihe sugar to me." Change Sought !n Park Set-up , SALEM (UP) Rep. Alfred H. Corbett (D-Portlandl, co - sponsor with Sen. Pat Lonergan (R-Port-land, of a bill to separate tlie State Parks Department from the Stale Highway Commission, said Friday the bill represents a pooling of ideas of two bodies. One is the natural resources subcommittee of the Portland Chamber of Commerce and the other, the interim committee on Columbia river parks and recrea tional facilities. i He said "Ihe phenomenal growth of the tourist and recreation in dustries in Oregon and the expect ed population growth in our area require that a separale parks commission be set up to project plans for the future." The bill provides for a five- memher park commission to he named by the governor and to this commission 62 parks -would -'be transferred from the Stale High way Commission.
