They point to the availability of skilled workers in the winter season, when general construction is at low ebb. Pictured here are men at work modernizing the Lava Court units on Franklin and East Third street in Bend. At top, Bud Troxel and Horace Flake are converting a former carport into a motel unit. Below, Flake at work on a door. (Dend Bulletin rhoto) Now's the Time To Make Those Winter Repairs What about tliat painting job you've been planning, or the rewiring? Now might be the time to un dertake such projects. At least, so advises Clark A. Price, mana ger of the local office of the State Employment Service. Price makes his recommenda tion primarily on the basis of the availability of skilled craftsmen during the winter months. Clark points out that during the winter a number of craftsmen are free for round-the-home or office projects that through the remain der of the year are occupied in major construction work. Clark, in urging businessmen and householders to have inside repair and improvement jobs done now, says: Miiy Jobs Available "Many inside jobs in the build ing, remodeling, painting and con struction lines can be performed in the winter months while expert enced craftsmen are available." Price particularly urges house holders and businessmen to under take interior improvements dur ing the winter in order to avoid the spring and summer construc tion rush. He points out that many projects planned for the spring and summer must be postponed be cause of the lack of available labor. Many building owners who wait until spring have to delay their projects for a year because by then "all the building craftsmen are working," Price reports. "Would it not seem to be only good business to get needed proj ects out of the way while they can be done and also provide purchas ing power when needed?" the lo cal employment service manager asks. All Get Help "Jobs and purchasing power help all of us," he sli'esses. Price advises that the local em ployment service is currently ac cepting job openings from business firms and home owners for work ers "for inside renovating, con struction, painting and remodel- ing ..." E. First & Franklin Phone US Use Classified for Results chants. lie says that openings are being listed "no mailer how short the duration of the job." Stressing that winter's gap in (lie construction pace can be made up with inside jobs, Price says that wages earned during the win ter will help bolster the economy. Aids Purchasing Power "Kniploymont, as everyone knows," he says, "not only pro vides purchasing ixiwer for tin1 wage earner, but also makes for increased business for Bend's Mer- Remember a few dol lars earned goes into local trade channel! und helps our economy.' Slill available in employment service files for immediate employ ment, according to Price, are a number of skilled workmen, in cluding cabinet makers, tile sel lers, brick layers, weather strip pers, floor layers, roofers, carpen ters, paper hangers, kemtoners, calciniincrs, panel palchers, brush painters, sign painters, plasterers, linoleum layers, laborers and others.
