Mr. and Mrs. William Randall
of Detroit, Mich., and their
daughter Pat are visiting in Bend
with Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Westfall,
28 Mueller. Randall is Mrs. West
fall's brother. Tuesday both fam
ilies traveled to Crater Lake, and
Ihey have visited points of Interest
in Central Oregon.
A drivers license examiner will
be on duty in Bend Monday, Aug.
30 at 345 E. 3rd St. between the
hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., ac
cording to an announcement re
ceived from the secretary of
state's office. Persons wishing
original licenses or permits to
drive are asked to file applica
tions well ahead of the scheduled
closing hour in order to assure
time for completion of the re
quired license test.
Mrs. J. Hess, 225 Florida, re
turned to Bend in mid-August
from France, with her sons An
thony, 6, and Philip 4. They left
Bend in March, making the round
trip on the liner United States.
In France Mrs. Hess visited her
parents and relatives there.

Estate Begins
CHICAGO (UP) The socialite
mother ot Montgomery - Ward
Thome touched off a battle today
over the young heir's Jl,300,000
estate with a charge that the
mother of his girl friend provided
him with funds lor drugs, and
liquor.
Wealthy Mrs. Marion Thorne
included her charge in a suit filed
in Circuit Court ' minutes after
Judge Charles Seidel admitted
Thome's will to probate.
The 20-year-old heir died nine
days after making a new will
which left half his fortune to Mau
reen Ragen, 18, and her mother,
Aleen Ragen. Miss Ragen was
named executrix of the estate,
Mrs. Thome's suit accused Mrs.
Ragen of exercising "domination
and undue influence" to promote
the romance of her daughter and
Thome.
It said that she gave Thome
money for barbituates, liquor and
narcotics and also enough to pay
the rent in the small apartment
where he was found dead.
After a lengthy inquest a coro
ner's jury ruled that the mail or
der heir died from natural causes.
A second investigation into his
death has been opened by Coroner
Walter E. McCarron who said he
still believes 'Thome died "under
mysterious circumstances."

Thorne was in a "confused, fright
ened and weakened mental con
dition" when he. changed hiswiU.
Congress Blocks
Cougar Dam Bill
WASHINGTON (UP) A bill to
authorize "partnership" , develop
ment of the Coiiear Dam site near
Eugene, Ore., was . blocked short
of final passage last night as
the regular congressional session
ended.
The bill proposed federal finan
cing of the flood control costs of
the project, on the south torK o:
the McKenzie River, with the city
of Eugene paying for power de
velopment costs. The city s elec
tric board would have controlled
distribution of power produced.
The bill was introduced by Rep.
Haris Ellsworth (R-Ore) and won
House approval. It was supported
by Sen. Guy Cordon (R-Ore) but
opposed by Sen. Wayne Morse'dnd-
Ore) and a final attempt to get
unanimous consent for its passage
last night was defeated..

LONDON (UP) Princess Mar
garet celebrated her 24th birthday
today at Balmoral Castle with
handsome Colin Tennant as her
guest and with another London
newspaper speculating on their en
gagement. , '
British newspapers splashed the
princess' picture across their front
pages. The tabloid Daily, Sketch
kept plugging at the rumor that
engagement of the two will be an
nounced at her birthday party.
Lord Beaverbrook's Daily Ex
press, which took the lead in her
alding the engagement rumors two
weeks ago, printed a birthday por
trait of Margaret and maintained
that Tennant went picnicking Fri
day with the princess, Queen Eliza
beth, her children and the queen
mother. .
Another picnic was scheduled for
today, if the weather held good,
The royal chef. Ronald Aubrey,
baked a birthday cake to be served
on the heather-swept moors near
the castle.

The Columbia Broadcasting Sys
tem put the once sensational musi
cal guessing game back on radio
Tuesday night and will air it from
8:30 to 9:30 EDT each Tuesday.
A half-hour TV version, begin
ning at 10:30 p.m., will tee off
on the ABC network Sept. 7 for
weekly exposure.
Stop The Music" is the show
that,' theoretically, keeps a person
home, by the radio in the nope
that he will be one of the few
amone the country's millions who
is telephoned from the New York
studio and given a chance to win
fabulous prizes by guessing the
title of a "mystery melody".
Important Chanire
There has been one important
change from the original version
which went on radio in the spring
of 1948 and was taken off in the
spring of 1952. The TV version
was on for three seasons.
The big interest in the original
setup was the multitude of mer
chandise prizes. There were dozens
of items and their total value fre-
ouently was as high as $30,000
Now. the prizes are U.S. savings
bonds $50 for identification of
each popular song and not less
than S1.000 for the "mystery melo
dy." For each week that there is
no grand prize winner, the jackpot
is increased by s&uu. ;
Format The- Same
Louis Melamed, producer and di
rector of the CBS program, said
there was little change in the pro
gram format. Bill Cullen is the
emcee, Jul Corey and Jack HasKeu
are the vocalists and Ray Bloch
is the musical director.

Gen. Li spoke here earlier this
week under police guard after an

assassination. He served under
the Nationalist leader before the
Communists drove him from the
China mainland. , -
The manifesto charged the
Communists in China "have
served alien interests in blind
obedience to Soviet RusslaV It
condemned the Reds for attempt
ing to "substitute the foreign ide
ology of Marx and Lenin in place
of China s ancient culture."
The two page document stated
millions ot people have perished
in liquidation campaigns unparal
leled in the history of man. The
record of Communist persecution
is almost unbelievable.
At the same time, the manifesto
charged, "Chiang KairShek's re
gime, secure in its Formosa ref
uge, seems unmoved and ignores
its responsibility to the suffering
people on the mainland.
The paper asKed "all anti-um-
munist political parties and
groups in China as well as patri
ots without political affiliation" to
join "the Freef China movement.'
4 Fines Assessed

TAIPEH, Formosa, (UP) Na
tionalist China was reported today
to be speeding the construction of
200 assault landing craft for an
attack on Communist-held China,
using parts shipped from the
United States. -
President Eisenhower announced
that 100 craft had been contracted
for In Formosa, but local press re
ports today said sutliclent parts
had been shipped her to build 200
and that several shipyards were
constructing tne vessels.
The reports followed declara
tions by Nationalist leaders that
an invasion of the China mainland
by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek
was nearing. Foreign observers
said a lack of landing ships andi
American support had prevented
such an attack.
. Nationalist circles said these de
ficiencies were being overcome
and observers believed Chiang'
forces were being beefed up to a
level beyond that required for de
fense alone.
' Four fines' were assessed this
morning, ball posted in one case
and forfeited in another, in Jus-'

Wanda J. Barnes filed suit for
divorce from Paul J. Barnes in

Panic Flares As
Wild Bulls Bolt
UBEDA. Spain (UP) Panic
spread through the Granada coun
tryside today when five fighting
bulls escaped from an overturned
truck and galloped through farms
and villages, challenging all
comers. ' .
One bull gored and seriously
injured a 62-year-old farmer.
Another challenged a tractor,
overturned it, and then killed a
donkey.
The bulls belonged to the famed
breeding farm of fighting bulls,
owned by Carlos Nunez.
