Illness Finally
Succeeds Where
Threats Failed
By EUGENE MlLOLOHUX
1 '(United Pre titaff Currtwpunilent)
IRVINGTON, N. J. (IB Illness hns
succeeded where pleas, threats and
offers of aid failed to move un aged
couple from a battered automobile
they called "home" for the past
tnree years.
Mrs. Emma Betzinger finally
made the decision to leave her
"house on wheels" ufter her 61
year-old husband, Henry, suffered
a series of heart attacks and was
forced to go to the home of a sis
ter at nearby Iseun, N. J.
"We've rented a couple of fur
; nished rooms and will move in
shortly," the 71-year-old woman
said with a heavy sigh. She had
hold out all these years for two
reasons to bent high rents and in
hopes she could again have a home
ol her own wnere she could use her
furniture. The two rooms won't do
that.
Bothered No One
. Irvington police were well aware
ot the couple s odd mode of living,
but always were reluctant to take
any action against them.
' Detective Lt. Howard G. McPoek
said the Betzingers violated no
health ordinances. The only possi
ble charge he could have brought
against them, he said, would have
been for loitering.
"But they never bothered any-
. body," he added. "If somebody
complained about them, they just
moved to a new parking spot.''
McPeek said' the Betzinger car
usually was parked either outside
u diner, where they would ear, or
next to Peter Wondel & Sons, Inc.,
an auto body shop where Betzinger
worked as a night watchman be
fore he became ill.
Deckle to Leave
The firm,, he said, allowed the
couple to use whatever facilities
were available in the plant and
they often slept there.
Since early November, however,
Mrs. Betzinger has been living in
the car alone. McPeek said ho ar
gued, cajoled and even mildly
threatened her but to no avail
Finally she decided she would
have to have some place where she
could take care of her hsuband and
decided on furnished rooms.
"She's very nice, very cleun and
very alert," he said. "It would
have done no one any good to have
mude a fuss about it as long as
they didn't cause trouble.
"I guess they just can't afford
the four or five unfurnished rooms
they need for their furniture. Not
the way rents are those days."

To Get Workers

by un acute shortage of
skilled workers, officials at the
Boll Aircraft plant here decided to
make interviewing easier for pros
pective employes.
They placed advertisements in
the local papers saying they would
conduct interviews in the homes
of anybody Interested In a job. Key

came from their neighborhoods.
Officials said they believed lt
