Hungarian Red
Reveals Tactics
Against Church
LONDON (IB In a review of the
Communists' post-war fight for su
preme power in Hungary, the vet
eran Communist leader and general
party secretary, Matyas Rakosi,
revealed the tactics used by the
Communists to break down the in
fluence of the Catholic church.
In an article in the Communist
party monthly, Social Review, Ra
kosi described how his party at
tacked the church and destroyed
its power under the pretext that it
was harboring "reactionary ele
ments.
The campaign against the
church came only after the Com
munists had succeeded in compro
mising and destroying the largest
Hungarian political organization,
the Smallholders' party, and in
splitting and absorbing the Social
ists.
In addition, the Communists
had brought under their control
the security police and their trade
unions. Only after having thus
prepared the ground did they at
tempt to attack the Christian
churches and the Catholic church
as the last in the long list of or
ganizations which they had marked
for destruction.
Campaign Described
In Rakosi's own words, the Com
munists' campaign against the
churches developed as follows;
"The winning over (by the com
munists) of the masses of peas
ants, the small bourgeoisie and, in
certain places, even of the indus
trial workers was rendered ex
tremely "difficult by the reaction
hiding behind the cloak of the
church.
"The majority (of the church
leaders were opposed to democracy
from the very first moment. This
opopsitlon was' particularly sharp
on the part of the Catholic church,
whose lands were taken away by
the land reform. The churches
fought almost united against us
from 1945 to 1948.
"First of all we broke up the re
actionary united front of the
churches. By making use of the
democratic possibilities in the Re
formed Calvinist and the Evan
Eelical Lutheran churches, we were
able to mobilize the believers who
sympathized with us. An agree
ment was reached in 1948 in the
spirit of mutual understanding
and indulgence which ensured
the peaceful co-existence of the
people's democracy and these
churches."1 -- ' '' v
Attack Organized
Having thus eliminated the Pro
testants from the light, the Lorn
munisls proceeded to make a fron
tal attack on the Catholic church,
by far the greatest spiritual power
in iiungai-y.
"The position with Ihc Catholic
church was different," Rakosi
went on. "The leaders of this
church maintained close relations
with the American imperialists, by
order of the Vatican.
"After the unmasking of the
Smallholders' parly as the agents
of the American imperialists, the
Social Democratic party was or
dered to man the front line. When
the treacherous Social Democratic
leaders have shared the same fate"
that is to say when the Commu

nists had eliminated them too
it was the turn of the anti-dem-
ocratic leaders of the catholic
church, who became the most ex
posed representatives of American
imperialism.
Their activities Became partic
ularly strong at the end of 1948
when, as the Rajk trial revealed.
this attitude would have been part
of the armed invasion which Tito
and his gang planned at that time
with the aid of spies and provoca
teurs who had been planted into
the Hungarian workers' move
ment.
Vatican under Uro
The Hungarian people's democ
racy, however, was on the alert. It
brought Cardinal Mindszcnty to
trial, which threw a light upon his
activities and those of his com
panions, and which disclosed that
under the activities of the church
they had not only planned to re
store the old landlord-capitalist
order but also the hated Hapsburg
regime.
The trial was accompanied by
a gigantic propaganda campaign
against Catholicism in general and
