WASHINGTON, May 20 (1PI It
was lust 150 years ago that con

The beginning was humble. The

. West Point, In 1802, was nothing
more than a small engineering
school. At first only one course

lessons on how to build fortifica

the first cadets.
There weren't many students
around in the beginning. In fact
during the -first 10 years there
were only 71 graduates.
me first or these was one
Joseph G. Swift, who grew up to
be a colonel. According to old
records in the Library of Congress,
Swift attained some measure of
distinction by standing up and
sassing Congress. He told the
lawgivers he thought they were
silly to kick in millions of dollars
for coastal fortifications when the
money ought to be "put to work
building up a mobile Army."
Congress, during the War of
1812, woke up to the fact that
West Point might amount to some
thing in the national military
picture. It authorized an increase
in the size of the academy to a
point where it could accommodate
250 cadets.
The first cadets were accented
without worry over age limits,
They took no entrance exams, and
had to meet no physical qualiflca.
lions, and they were not even
subject to the Articles of War.
Today, a man can be turned
down if he has a skin rash on his
elbow.
One of the most famous among
the commanders at the "Point"
was the fifth. He was Capt. Syl-
vanus Thayer. It was he who first
placed an emphasis on character
building, leadership, and discipline.
some oi nis ideas still are on
the books at the academy.
While he headed up the staff.
and shortly after he left, there
appeared a number of raw re
cruits who went ahead to become
famous. Among them were fellows
by name of Lee, Grant, Jackson,
Meade, McClellan, Longstreet,
Sheridan, and Sherman. ,
Later came men like - Mac-
Arthur, Eisenhower, Bradley, and
many another.
On three occasions the academy
nearly had to shut down because
of a lack of funds.- Once a super
intendent borrowed J65.000 from a
friend to keep the place going.
McGranery Gets
Senate Approval;
Silent on Plans
. WASHINGTON, May 21 (IP)
James P. McGranery, confirmed
as attorney general by a 52 to
18 Senate vote, waited for a strat
egy talk with President Truman
before announcing his plans to
combat corruption in the govern
ment. The 56-vear-old Philadelphia
federal judge, who was nominated
seven weeks ago to succeed J.
Howard McGrath as head of the
Justice Department, told report
ers he would have "absolutely
nothing to say" about reviving
tne long-staiicd cleanup drive un
til he checks signals with Mr.
Truman. - ,
McGrath was fired by Mr. Tru
man for ousting Newbold Morris
as the government 8 head cor
ruption hunter. McGranery said
previously that he had no inten
tion of rehiring Morris but will
lean primarily on FBI chief J.
Edgar Hoover to ferret out
"wrongdoers" on the federal pay
roll. McGranery Is expected to take
his oath of office later this week,
perhaps at a White House cere
mony. He gave up a litetime job
on the bench to accept the cab
inet post, although President Tru-
mans -administration now has
less than seven months to go.
Senate approval of his appoint
ment came late Tuesday after six
hours of debate in which McGran
ery was criticized by Sens. Homer
Ferguson (R-Mich.) and Arthur
V. Watkins (R-Utah).
The 18 votes against McGran
ery , were all from Republicans.
Fourteen Republicans joined with
38 Democrats in voting for him.

Porter, Manaeer,
By PATRICIA WIGGINS
WASHINGTON, May 21 (IB Agri
culture Department food experts
advised housewives Wednesday to
plan potato-less meals around such
nutritious substitutes as rice, baked
beans, spaghetti or that old South
ern standby, hominy.
They said all. these foods are
plentiful, Inexpensive, easy to pre
pare and healthful. - !
The experts don't feel that sweej
potatoes offer much consolation to
jPinohcd .pocketbooks these days.
Lost-fall's cijop was not large, and
cutcnt sweet .potato prices ' are
high with remaining supplies of
poor quality. ;
Agriculture Department officials
see no hope for relieving the
present "potato famine" until the
new crop starts coming into the
markets next month. Even then,
there's no guarantee that potatoes
will be cheap or plentiful. Farmers
simply haven t been planting many
potatoes - since the government
dropped price supports on them
last year.
Price Stabilizer Ellis Arnall, who
has scores of agents at work across
the country trying to break up A
flourishing black market in pota
toes, appealed to housewives earlier
this week to cooperate by giving
spuds the go-by until they are of
fered above the counter at ceiling
prices.
, The food experts said housewives
will find it easier to comply with
Arnall's request than they may
suppose.
Spaghetti, macaroni and noodles
all made from wheat are high on
all lists of potato substitutes be
cause they are already familiar to
the cook and her clientele in near
ly every American home.
Rice, which many families have
discovered" since the potato
shortage began, is also highly re
garded by the professional menu
planners. They conceded that some habit
ridden husbands may go right on
demanding plain potatoes with their
meat. But there's a remedy for that
too send him out to find, and pay
for, a few pounds of spuds.
