Brooklyn Turns Down Offer
By LEO II. PETERSEN
" ; MIAMI, March 21 flIE) General Manager Buzz Bavasi
said Friday he has turned down an offer of $250,000 for a
young pitcher in the Brooklyn Dodger farm system.
The offer, he said, ca'me. from the Cleveland Indians de
spite the fact that the pitcher is subject to the draft. Bavasi
did not name the young hurler involved but the United Press
learned it is John Fodres, a left hander who was the most
; -sensational pitcher in class D
baseball last year. , , :.
Although "not on' the roster'1
of the parent club, Podres has
been spring trainirg with the Dod
gers and baseball men who have
seen him say he Is destined to be
one of the greatest.
. "He is quick, sharp and lias fine
control," owner Bob Carpenter of
: the Phillies said after watching
jhim in an exhibition game. "He

matures." . . '.
" id Years Old
Only 19,, Podres won 21 while
losihg only 'three with Hazard, Ky.,
in the Mountain States league last
season. He led the league In strike
outs with 228, only giving 37 earned
runs in 26 games for a mark of
1.67 in his first year in organized
ball.'- He stands five feet eleven
and weighs 170. '" .- -
"If he doesn't make It this year
he's sure to make it in 1853," man
ager Chuck Dressen of the Dodgers
predicted. "He's the best looking
pitching : prospect . I've seen in
years."-
Bavasi dIH not say who contacted
him in behalf .of Cleveland, but
said he received a call one day
asKing if. the pitcher was tor sale.
T told mm no, Bavasi recalled,
'and added .that the asking price
would be the same as it was when
number of clubs inquired about
Don Newcombe. We put a quarter
of a million dollar price tag on
ivewcomoe.
Price Rleht
The Cleveland man told me that
price was all right, but then I went
into the same shell other general
managers and club owners do and
said we were not lnterested; in
cash. .
For cash means nothine anv

for an established star, but' money

The court Cowboys from Wyoming,
10th top basketball team in the na
tion, were brleled by Coach bv
Shelton Friday as they prepared for
action in. the western . regional
NCAA cage playoffs Friday night.
Wyoming, the Bkyline conference
champion, meets defense-minded
Oklahoma City University in. the
second game of' . ti doublheader.
UCLA, winner of the Pacific Coast
conference, plays Independent San
ta Clara in the first game.
The Cowboys are favored to win
the western, regional and meet the
winner of the Kansas City tourna
ment, for the western title.' The,
winner of that game will then battle
the eastern champion for the na
tional crown. '
- However Coach Doyle Parack's
Chiefs may offer contention to the
Cowpokes. Oklahoma City had the
second best defensive record in the
nation during the 1951-52 season,
holding Texas Christian to 41 points
and Oklahoma A & M to only 38. ,
UCLA could prove the surprise
team. The Bruins, with: an unim
pressive 20-10 mark, finished, the
season strongly and upset highly
regarded Washington in the PCC
playoffs. ,.' . , . . : ' ,'
Santa Clara, which produced an
average of 61.5 points per game
while recording a 15-9 seasonal
mark, already holds a seven-point
win over UCLA this year. ; The
Broncos,' playing their best of a
hot-aiid-cold style, could; provide
formidable opposition to anybody.

games play Saturday, while the
losers hook, up in a consolation
