Yankee Bobsled
Team Places 2nd
In Trial Heats
, OSLO, Norway Feb. 21 (IB The
1 No. 1 ,U. S. team steered by Stan
Benham of Lake Placid, N. Y.,
placed second behind Germany
Thursday in the first two heats
of the Olympic four-man bobsled
competition on a ' track so slushy
that Friday's final two heats may
have to be postponed.
An unseasonably hot sun raised
temperatures to the mid-40's and
made a slush-chute of .the 1,500
meter nearly one mile Frogner
seteren bobsled-run and produced
gaping holes in the ice that ham
pered most of the sleds.
At the end of the first two heats,
the course was In such badly dam
aged condition that Olympic offi
cials feared Friday's final two
scheduled heats might have to be
postponed.
-Delay Seen
One Olympic official- said that
the course might not be put back
into shape Sunday, the conclud
ing day, and that the four-man
bobsled competition might not be
completed.
Benham's sled made Its first run
In one minute, 17.44 seconds and
Its second in 2:17.78 for a combined
clocking of 2:35.22. The time was
nearly two seconds slower than the
combined clocking of -the crack
German sled.
The Americans, who won the
four-man championship in the 1948
Olympics, . were a strong favorite
to repeat.
Germany's daredevil sled, which
included Andreas Ostler and Lor
enz Nieberl, the two-man Olympic
champions, cascaded down the rap
idly softening Frognersetern run in
heats of 1:16.36 and 1:17.57 for a
combined time of 2:33.93.
The No. 2 U. S. sled, steered by
Jim Bickford of Saranac Lake,
N.Y., was in ninth place at the end
of the first two heats with a com
bined time of 2:39.10.
S&itzerland's two entries were in
third and fourth place.
Austria's No. 1 sled was fifth
and Sweden's No. 2 team was
sixth.

AGREEMENT REACHED
KENNEWICK, Feb. 21 UPi The
Trl-City Braves of the Western
International Baseball League
have signed a working agreement
with the Philadelphia Phillies,
Dick Richards, Braves general
manager, said Thursday.
Trl-City had a similar agree
ment with the St. Louis Cardin
als last year.
The first man to be eliminated
will receive nothing more than
his expenses. The others will
meet in matches of elimination,
until the final two meet for top
honors and the $250 special
award for the' winner. The card
will get-under way at 8:30.

In the battle between the two
Ford teams, the count was close
in the opening period, with the
Prineville squad holding a slim
9 to 6 margin at the end of the
period. In the second period, the
Prineville team started hitting the
basket and rapidly drew ahead.
At halftime, the count was 24 to
13 In favor of the visitors; Quant
and Odegard' led the Houk scor
ing with 15 points each, while big
Jim Duff accounted for 11 of the
home team's points.1
The Culver-Bend American Le
gion game proved to be a high
scoring affair with a total of 164
points checked through the hoops
in the course of the contest. Cul
ver, took an early lead and had
the Legionnaires down two
points, 25 to 23, at the end of the
first quarter. The boys from the
North Unit country lost their
range In the second quarter and
scored only seven points while"
the Bend Legion quintet was on
a scoring spree that netted 30
points.
The Bend team s half-time lead
was 53 to 32. The game was more.
closely played than the score
would indicate. Slick Fox o'f the
Bend team led all scorers with a
total of 34 paints. Bowman led
his north country team with 22
points, 12 of which were collected
in the first period.

For NCAA Meet

university has turned down un
opportunity to try for a berth In
the NIAB basketball tournament
and will shoot for the NCAA.
Athletic Director Bill Fenton
said that to play in the NAIB
would require winning a state
tournament. That would mean Ihe
